Stay connected to HMRC Reconnect with HMRC

Hello Helen81,

Welcome to the Community page,

So to resolve this error, the MA-(Master Admin) of the account will need to go into the account and settings section>advanced and turn MTD off there and then re auth the connection and re connect it up this should then stop the message come keep coming up for you.

I am having the same problem suddenly. If I go to turn off the MTD and turn it on again will i need to use my gateway ID or does it just reconnect automatically

We appreciate you reaching out to the Community space, annmcdngh. Yes, you'll need to enter your gateway ID when reconnecting the Making Tax Digital (MTD) feature in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Once your MTD connection expires or is unauthorised, the program will notify you that reauthorisation is needed. Please follow the prompts and log in using your HMRC credentials in the pop-up window.

However, if you didn't see a prompt, please follow the steps below to manually re-authorise your connection to HMRC.

  1. Go to the Gear icon and select Account and Settings.
  2. Navigate to the Advance and turn on MTD.
  3. Proceed to Authorise Now and select Continue
  4. Log in to HMRC in the pop-up window using your Government Gateway credentials:
    • Enter your HMRC Government Gateway user ID and password
  5. Click the Give permission button to allow connection with HMRC
  6. Once authorised, click Continue.

When completed, you’ll see an MTD badge on your Taxes dashboard, confirming that MTD for VAT is enabled. I'll also include this article for more details about this process: Troubleshooting MTD (Making Tax Digital) issues in QuickBooks Online.

Finally, check out these resources to learn how to generate a detailed list of transactions for each box on your VAT return and adjust your VAT liability.
