Claiming for the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme

Now that the CJRS portal day is finally here, I was impressed with the number of helpful emails from HMRC telling me that this easy step-by-step process was now open.

That euphoria dissolved when I spent a number of hours trying to find a way of getting into the portal. I logged into the Company's Gateway account. Apparently you can only move forward if your account already has the PAYE for Employers service enabled.

We've never used the PAYE for Employers service and I can't really see who does use it. Using any modern accounting package connected with HMRC for RTI, who would need to use it? Anyway, I've gone through the process of requesting this PAYE service to be added to the account, but it does not accept the reference information. Certainly correct as I copied it from QB.

I notice that in the QB Advanced Payroll HMRC settings, there is another different HMRC user ID and password which enables RTI connection. Is this the login I now need rather than our old HMRC GG login?

It's been a frustrating day as I've achieved nothing.

Presumably, once I do manage to request this PAYE service, so I can link into the claim system, HMRC will POST A LETTER with some an authorisation code.

If anyone has managed to successfully complete a claim and can advise, please please do!

Thanks

Charles

PS Not my lucky day - the QB post system is now saying that I'm post flooding. No! I'm trying to post this message!

Hello @cndh,

We're unable to determine your login credentials since it's base on the data mandated by your agency. With this, I'd recommend contacting the HMRC so you can confirm your username and password. With their tools, they can also help you claim the aid assistance you needed.

Lastly, here's a few articles you can read for ideas about how you can manage your account and transactions: Help Articles for QuickBooks Online and Payroll.

If there's anything else that I can help you with, please let me know in the comments down below. Always around ready to help.

Hi @cndh

Sorry - I can't give you anything definitive but which reference number did the setup ask for?

  • PAYE reference is alphanumeric in the format of 123/XX12345, or 123/X12345 (prior to 2001)
  • Accounts Office Reference : 13 character used for the Payment Reference (123AB45678910)
  • Unique Tax Reference : 10 digit number

Possibly but if you're already inside the Gateway, I don't think so.

From memory, the RTI username/password is the same as the Government Gateway username/password.

Regularly gets me too - especially if I copy/paste some html it doesn't like!

Update

I managed to get a human on the HMRC CJRS helpdesk and explained my problem with the Gateway account. Eventually, after trying unsuccessfully, to think of different people who might have started this other account, that had the PAYE online service on it, one of the Directors mentioned the correct name. (This person had left the business at least 6 years previously). HMRC was then able to delete her account and that freed up the service for me to add it, after giving it a couple of days.

This I did this morning and it enabled the service immediately. I've now successfully claimed for CJRS.

Phew!

I have claimed on HMRC website and haven't found it that troublesome, I was advised to create pay run with a new line that I have called furlough, where I have calculated 80% of salary, I had to put 0 in the actual salary line. then all the total was submitted to HMRC. you only need utr, names and NI's of the employees you are claiming for

it was quite quickly done

Yes, you're right, it was quickly done, once we had the right tools.

No problem with the actual payroll or the claim part but the issue was the Government Gateway account and this hitherto unknown ex-employee having another GG account with the crucial PAYE online tax service on it.
