UK Sole Trader / Cash Accouting - Equity Acounts

As I understand it a sole trader usinge cash acounting only needs Owners Equity and Owners Draw equity accounts. In Quickbooks there are Retained Earnings and Opening Balance Equity acounts, why do I need these acounts and why can I not make them inactive?

Thanks

Let me share some information about inactivating accounts in the Chart of Accounts.

In QuickBooks Online (QBO), some accounts can’t be deactivated since they are the default ones. One of them is the Retained Earnings. This account reports the net income of your company on the Balance Sheet report. This is a default account created when you set up QuickBooks, or when an event triggers them, like turning on the VAT setting. You can’t make the account inactive or use it for any other purpose.

To learn more about which default or special accounts can be deleted, edited, or merged in QuickBooks Online, check out this article: Manage default and special accounts in your QuickBooks Online chart of accounts. If you need to inactivate your non-default account, just follow the the steps below:

  1. Go to Settings ⚙ and select Chart of accounts.
  2. Find the account you want to delete.
  3. Click the Action ▼ dropdown and select Make inactive.

If you need to hide several accounts, just find and select all accounts you want to hide. Then, choose Batch actions ▼ and then Make inactive. You can check out this article for more details about making accounts inactive: Make an account inactive on your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online.
