Hi,
I only now restart my account for 2023 and closed my accounts for 2023 by entering the date of 31/12/2022 in the field "close the books".
But when I make the first journal entries for 2023 with a date on 01/01/23 the journal entry number is not 1 but continues with the last number of 2022 + 1.
The year before I managed to start at 1 for beginning of 2022.
Did I miss a step in the year end operations?

Let me help you reset the journal entry's numbering sequence, pmassen.
You are not missing any step in the year-end operation. We'll just need to reset it and create a dummy journal entry. Here's how:
You'll use the next sequence on the succeeding journal entry numbers. For example, you entered the sequence "01" in the box. The next number will be "02." You'll also want to delete the dummy journal entry to prevent unwanted transactions on your books (it won't reset the sequence). Once done, open the dummy journal entry again. Then, click the More button and tap Delete.
For the detailed steps in creating a journal entry, you can click this link: Create Journal in QuickBooks Online. If you need more resources in managing your QuickBooks account, you can browse our Help Articles page.
You now have the correct journal entry on your account. If you have additional questions, feel free to comment anytime. I'm always here to lend a hand. Stay safe.

Hi there, pmassen.
It's great to know that you found my colleague's explanation helpful. Please keep in mind that you can always ask follow-up questions in this thread or in the Community.
We'll also make every effort to provide relevant information to your concerns, as well as specific troubleshooting steps, if necessary. Keep safe and have a wonderful day.
If you do not mind me saying, this is a convoluted solution that could easily be bypassed by giving us the ability to edit the field held somewhere amongst the settings.
My situation, which I am sure is not unique, is of importing a payroll journal each month, to which I give a unique reference prefixed with PY. Not only is it convoluted, but there is a missing number in the sequence each month. Before the import, the next journal number is 37. I can post a dummy journal so that the next is 38, but I am unable to reset it to 37.
