Editing and assigning an invoice number is quick and easy. I'll guide you on how Simon.
QuickBooks Online (QBO) assigns unique numbers whenever you create an invoice. Thus, if you'll enter a specific invoice number, QuickBooks automatically detects it and assign the next number based on the last one you've entered. I've attached a screenshot with a sample invoice and the invoice number you entered.
Once you click Save and new, it automatically prefills the number in sequence based on the assigned number you first entered. Please see the screenshot below:
The number remains generated in sequence but may change once a new or another number is entered again.
In addition, customising your sales form appearance and layout is an effective way to enhance your business communications. For more details on how you can do about this, I've added this article for your reference: Customise Invoices, Estimates, And Sales Receipts In QuickBooks Online.

Hi MariaSoledadG,
there’s nothing that is quick and easy with QB I can assure you.
I tried to edit an existing invoice and saved it with a new number but the original invoice then gets deleted, so this doesn't work for me.
I’ve noticed that QB is very different on iPhone/iPad to windows desktop, almost unrecognisable, if it could be made to function in a similar way that would be very helpful.
is the snap receipt element likely to be improved anytime soon? It’s really bad and frustrating to use :(
thanks anyway,
simon
Hi there, Simon.
Thank you for visiting the QuickBooks Community. I'll be sharing information on how changes/updates work in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
I can see how this option would be helpful for you and your business. At the moment, we can't provide an exact time frame as to when the program updates concerning the snap receipts feature.
I'm also adding our blog site to stay current with the latest QuickBooks news and feature enhancements: The QuickBooks Blog.
Please know that you're always welcome to post a reply in this thread if you need further assistance while working on the snap receipt feature in QBO. I’m here to help and to ensure you’re taken care of. Have a good one.
