Transaction categories changed

I am finding it really hard to trust Quickbooks self employed. For some reason it decided to reallocate almost all of my transactions as personal income. When I contacted support they just told me to change them all back again. I have spent hours reconciling my transactions with my bank statements to ensure they are all in the correct category, whilst doing this I noticed that some transactions were also duplicated and needed to be excluded, which I have also done. How do I know that Quickbooks self employed won't do this again!? It's ridiculous to pay for accounting software that you have to check yourself to ensure it is doing what you pay it to do. I have spent far too much time setting up and then correcting Qb self employed to get rid of it now but it's really not the service I was expecting :(

I know that excluding those duplicated transactions would be time-consuming for you, @Rooster74

I appreciate you for sharing your experience with us, Rooster74.

Thanks for joining us here in the Community. I’m here to help prevent the categorization of your transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE).

To avoid transactions automatically changing their category, let’s double-check this setting on your account, then edit or delete it if necessary.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon at the top, select Rules.
  2. Look for the rule you need to review.
  3. Pick Edit to modify it.
  4. Otherwise, click the Edit drop-down and choose Delete.

Please note that if you delete a rule, it won't be applied going forward. However, it also does not erase anything that's been applied so far.

For more detailed information, you can check out this article about managing bank transactions in QBSE: Use rules to speed up reviewing and categorizing transactions.

It wasn't anything to do with rules, Quickbooks just randomly changed a lot of my business transactions to personal. How can I be sure that it won't happen again?

Thanks for coming back, @Rooster74. As additional insights, QuickBooks only depends on what your bank sends to us.

Hence, I'd recommend contacting your bank to verify these transactions in your account.

I'd also suggest contacting our QBSE Customer Care team to help you check the issue. They can also request to investigate the issue whenever necessary.

For future reference, read through this article to learn more about handling duplicate transactions in QBSE.

I don't need to contact my bank, I have checked through all my bank statements. Quickbooks duplicated some transactions and I have excluded them. I am concerned that as Qb altered some transaction categories that it could happen again. I shouldn't have to check that Qb is doing what I pay for it to do correctly.

Maybe your personal categories are turned off? (My were showing only personal income and personal spending, so it seems like match to what you are experiencing.)

If so...

Solution:

Step 1. Go to gear icon (settings). Under "TOOLS."
Step 2. Select "Manage categories." In the upper-right corner
Step 3. Toggle (switch on) "Personal categories."

Unfortunately, the "Personal categories" toggle (switch off) again when you run a report and then click on particular category (which links to transactions). No worries, simply switch on "Personal categories" again (Follow steps above.)

Rinse and repeat 15-20 times an hour.

It's tax season. Having fun yet?

I found and reported this bug with the QuickBooks Self Employed team at Intuit. As of today, a QBSE rep has escalated for further investigation and solution.
