Problem solved. The VAT report went through perfectly today though I must have tried a dozen times yesterday. It can only have been a problem with the Government website.
Thanks for reaching to us here in the Community, gw962019.
I've looked into this further for related investigations, but there aren't any. Let’s perform the basic troubleshooting steps to fix the issue.
To begin, check the login credentials and tax account information used to access your HMRC account. Make sure they match with the ones set up in QuickBooks.
Any mismatches can cause an issue when filing the VAT return. If all the data are correct, let’s go ahead and file the tax return using the InPrivate window or incognito mode.

Here’s how to access for each browser:
If you can connect to the HMRC, go back to your regular browser and clear its cache. Should this not work in a private window, I suggest using another browser to help narrow down the cause of this unexpected behavior.

I am signed up to Making Tax Digital and have sent several returns without problem. However the latest return has generated "There was a problem submitting VAT" and also "Please check the VAT data that is submitted".
I cannot find any problem with the data.
Can you advise.
Hello Handtools
What is the date range you are submitting for?Does the government gateway website show that HMRC are expecting the same date range?
Emma
Date range is October 2019 to December 2019 and the Gateway is expecting the same range. I think the problem is some item on the data submitted since I got the messages "There was a problem submitting VAT", "Please check the VAT data that is submitted" and "VAT data mismatch".
I cannot see anything wrong with data (the report is only 5 pages long) and there are no VAT exceptions.

Hello Handtools
Thanks for letting us know.We did not have any reports of there being a problem however sometimes in busy periods there can be an issue when lots of people are trying to submit at the same time.
