Hello Gillianhind,
Unfortunately we do not support this in QuickBooks you would need to reach out to an accountant who would be able to advise you the best way to record this.
We welcome all other comments though from others

Hi @gillianhind
Yes - that looks fine to me - although I don't enter a VAT Code in the Debit line (or use NoVAT to keep this line off the VAT return).
I've seen slightly different methods on this forum (different Cr/Db accounts) but I've been doing it this way for years (in QB Desktop & now QBO) without an issue.
Screenshot attached.
Hi Paul
thanks for that. Why is it duplicated in the screenshot tho ?
Hi @ianuk1
Sorry - should have mentioned - that's for two cars.
I looked at your screen shot and used it to enter my figures, but it won’t let me out of the journal until I add a line with the VAT liability, even though it has already entered it correctly at the bottom. How do I get it to accept the entry?
Hi, SM1947. I'm here to ensure you can save your journal entry in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
Before providing any troubleshooting steps, can you share a screenshot of the screen? This way, we can determine why an error occurred when saving the transaction.
In the meantime, I suggest double-checking the accounts used in the journal entry. It could be the reason why an error occurs. In addition, it would also be best to consult with a professional accountant who can offer additional guidance in tracking the figures in the program. If you don't have one, you can check our Find an Accountant tool to look for an expert near you.
If the error persists after ensuring the accounts are correct and consulting an account, I recommend accessing your QBO account using a private window. This way, we can determine whether this is a browser cache-related issue. The browser utilises cached data to load web pages quickly. However, excessive cache can lead to problems that impact the appearance and functionality of your account.
Using a private window helps us verify the issue since this doesn't save any data files. You can refer to these keyboard shortcuts to open an incognito window:
If you're able to successfully save the journal, I recommend clearing your regular browser cache. Doing so deletes all the data from your browser and optimizes its performance. Using other supported browsers also helps us verify if this is a browser-specific issue.

If you have more questions about recording your entries or taxes in QuickBooks, I'm ready to help you out again. Please reply in this thread, and I'll be right here with you.
Hi, thank you for your reply, but I have now managed to sort it and submitted my VAT return. Thank you again.
