Can't connect to HMRC?

Hi, @acheason. Since it is offline upon submitting your VAT return.

I highly suggest checking the official HMRC website. Then, check if there is a planned downtime or a known issue; you will see a message confirming the system is unavailable. Or check for any ongoing investigation or maintenance.

If there is no announced maintenance or downtime, the possible cause is that your MTD authorization token has expired. You need to renew this token every 18 months. To fix this issue, first disconnect your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account. Then, reconnect it. Here are the steps:

  1. Navigate to the Gear Icon on your main screen.
  2. Select Account and Settings.
  3. On the left menu, select Advanced.

  4. Find the Making Tax Digital section and look for an option to Re-authorize.
  5. Follow the prompts to reconnect:
  • Your software will direct you to the HMRC Government Gateway sign-in page.
  • You must sign in with the Government Gateway ID and password that you used for MTD.
  • Click Grant Authority to allow your software to file the return on your behalf.

Once you are redirected back to QBO with a Connected message, resubmit your VAT return.
