I have selected Amounts are exclusive of tax and when in the VAT box it asks to manage tax rate, completed that for 20% standard but it still does not add the vat amount
Let’s dive into some troubleshooting steps to help you add VAT to your invoices, Carol.
In QuickBooks Online (QBO), once VAT is set up and enabled in your account, and your products or services have the 20% VAT rate assigned as their default tax rate, the VAT amount will automatically populate on your invoices.
Before proceeding, please confirm that VAT is enabled in your QBO account by navigating to the Taxes section and selecting VAT. If you're prompted to set up VAT instead of seeing your VAT dashboard, it means VAT is not yet enabled and will need to be set up first.
If VAT is already enabled and configured, I recommend clearing your browser’s cache and cookies. Sometimes, outdated or corrupted cached files can interfere with QuickBooks Online’s functionality, causing issues like VAT not displaying correctly even when your products or services have the correct 20% VAT rate assigned.
After clearing your cache and cookies, please restart your browser to ensure the changes take full effect. A supported and up-to-date browser can also improve performance and security when working with QBO.

I had the exact same issue recently, Carol.... I had selected “Amounts are exclusive of tax” and added the 20% standard rate in the dropdown, but it still wouldn’t show VAT on the invoice.
What worked for me was double-checking that VAT was not only enabled, but also correctly linked to each product/service item I was adding to the invoice. I had missed assigning the VAT rate to the individual line itemsonce I fixed that, the VAT calculated automatically. I hope it helps you
