VAT return not linking with HMRC

Hi all. I’ve been trying to submit Kate VAT returns on my account dating back to early 2020. I’ve turned off MTD on my account, submitted the returns and turned MTD back on but the returns aren’t showing on my hmrc account.
can anyone help with this?

VAT return not linking with HMRC

Thanks for getting back to us, Russ.

Let me help check why your VAT returns not linking with HMRC. You've mentioned that you've turned off MTD.

When you enable it, you'll want to make sure QuickBooks is connected to HMRC. That way, you'll be able to see submitted returns on your HMRC account.

Here's how to autorise QuickBooks to interact with HMRC.

  1. Click the Gear icon to go to your Account and Settings, and then select Advanced.
  2. Select the Making Tax Digital header to expand the section and select Learn how to connect.
  3. Select Let's go and follow the instructions.
  4. You'll be directed to the HMRC page.
  5. Click Continue to sign in.
  6. Enter your MTD user ID and password to sign in. HMRC will have sent you these details via email when you signed up for MTD.
  7. Select on Grant authority to continue and the authorisation process will begin.
  8. Once you complete the authorisation process, you'll see a message 'You're connected to HMRC'.
  9. Click Continue.

You'll see the MTD badge enable on the Taxes page once the authorisation is completed. Also, you'll need to re-authorise QuickBooks every 18 months based on HMRC's guidelines.

You also need to make sure the MTD credentials provided by HMRC is correct. If you're using an incorrect login information, returns could be posted on a different HMRC account.

Once done, login to your HMRC account and check again your returns. If they're not showing up, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Online Live Team. They can check this by pulling up your account.

I'm adding these articles for additional guide and get answers to frequently asked questions about MTD.

VAT return not linking with HMRC

Welcome to the Community, Russ27.

All submitted VAT returns can be found on the VAT page of your QuickBooks Online (QBO). Since you're experiencing it otherwise, we can perform some browser troubleshooting to fix this.

To start with, let's log into your QBO account using an incognito or private browser. Since this doesn't store data in the cache, it the best place to isolate browser issues.

Kindly use either of the following shortcut keys:

  • Google Chrome, press CTRL  + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press CTRL  + Shift + P
  • Safari: press Command + Shift + N

Then, try running the report again by following the steps below:

  1. Go to the Taxes menu.
  2. Choose VAT.
  3. Click the Returns tab.

If it works, you may want to clear the browsing history of your regular web browser. This will remove previously-stored browsing data that might have caused the issue. Otherwise, you can try using other supported browsers to be thorough.

In case you want a reference with VAT processing in QBO, check our Resource page through this link: VAT for QBO United Kingdom.

If you have other questions on future tasks, feel free to access our Help Articles.

Keep in touch for more questions with this managing VAT information. I've got your back. Have a good day.

All of the files say either paid with a tick or filed but they still aren’t showing on my hmrc account.

Thanks for getting back to us, @Russ27.

I'll make sure you're able to submit your VAT return. Since you're trying to submit a 2020 return, you'll want to make sure that your books are not closed during submission. This might be the reason why QuickBooks is not syncing with your HMRC account.

To check, go to Gear and then select Account and Settings. Choose the Advanced tab and then hover towards the Accounting section.

Learn more about fixing connection issues in the links below.

Please let me know how it goes after trying the above recommendation as I want to ensure this is resolve for you. Take care and stay safe.
