VAT return using QuickBooks desktop

I cannot type into my first VAT return using QuickBooks.  When I try to enter a figure, I am directed away from the page.    The return is due tomorrow - help!

VAT return using QuickBooks desktop

You've reached the right place for help, Gerrie.

I want to make sure you're able to process VAT return seamlessly.

The QuicKBooks behavior you're experiencing can sometimes be caused by a large pile of cache in your browser. There are times when browser's cache data becomes full of frequently-accessed pages or damaged.

We can follow some troubleshooting steps to fix this. First, let's try using a private or an incognito browser. Follow these keyboard shortcuts to start an incognito session:

Kindly use either of the following shortcut keys:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P

If this works, proceed to delete your browsing history to clear out the cache or data that's causing the issue. Use this article as a guide: Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online. Otherwise, try using a different browser to be more thorough.

QuickBooks Online (QBO) automatically creates a list of VAT codes once you set up VAT. Though we're unable to provide which specific code to use for the goods delivered via Courier, you can visit the following articles page to know more about the different VAT code/rate, the description of each code, and codes use for sales and purchase forms.

In case you want a reference with VAT processing in QBO, check our Resource page through this link: VAT for QBO United Kingdom.

If you have other questions on future tasks, feel free to access our Help Articles.

Keep in touch for more questions with this managing VAT information. I've got your back. Have a good day.

And the Intuit reply to this problem just sums up how bad their customer support as got. Reply is the typical copy and paste reply for QBO not for Desktop.

@Gerrie  hopefully an actual person will help you out soon

VAT return using QuickBooks desktop

I am desperate for some help today.   I just need to file my VAT return, for which I have all the numbers, but although I have taken the necessary steps to set up Quickbooks for VAT, whenever I try to enter the numbers into the page, it switches me away to some other irrelevant page.

Am I doing the right thing by just clicking on the hyperlink in Box 1 onwards which currently shows £0.00, or is there some other way of doing it?  Urgent help greatly appreciated; I have paid the VAT owing in time, but don't want to be penalised for a late return - my first using MTD

Hello there. I understand the urgency of filing your VAT return as soon as possible. I'm here to share some troubleshooting steps that will help you sort things out.

In this case, we can perform the Verify and Rebuild tool troubleshooting process. Doing this will also give you a better experience and fix unusual issues in your account.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the File menu, and select Utilities.
  2. Choose Verify Data, then tap OK to close all windows. If you see “Your data has failed the integrity check”, you'll need to rebuild your file. If there are no problems with your data, you’re done.

If there are problems with your company file, you'll have to rebuild it.

  1. Go to the Files menu and select Utilities.
  2. Choose Rebuild Data, and then click OK.
  3. Tap OK to make a backup to prevent data loss along the process.
  4. Hit OK to continue the rebuild process.

For more insights about the verify and rebuild process, you can check out this article: Verify and Rebuild data.

Once everything looks good, you can proceed with filing your VAT returns in QuickBooks Desktop. You can refer to this article for a step-by-step process: Submit a VAT return to HMRC through MTD for QuickBooks Desktop.

Please tap the Reply button if you need anything else. I'll be around. Take care always!
