What category should I use when entering an invoice from a casual worker/occasional contractor?

Depends on what they are doing for you. Repairs is self-explanatory and if the contractor is repairing something for you that is what you would use.

Contract Labour is a good catch all for work not specific to a project and would cover temporary office help.

Other than just as payroll how would you classify what work they perform if they were your full-time employees and not temporary contractors.

Hi John

They are self-employed people that are sometimes specialist (tree surgeons mainly) or just workers we get in for specific jobs to do labour.

Thanks for your help - I'm new to Quickbooks.

Then it all relies on where on your tax form you want it to appear. If you currently have a category for Landscaping then tree surgery might fit. If it is just general labour to supplement or augment your regular staffing you could add a category for Contract Labour
