Understanding Modern Awards 2026 changes for Retail Businesses

Retail payroll complexity comes from scale and variety: junior rates, Saturday and Sunday penalties, casual loading, all applied differently depending on the shift and the employee's classification under the General Retail Industry Award (MA000004). When you're running this across a large casual team, small setup errors don't stay small for long.

What's changed in 2026

Modern award minimum wages increased 4.75% from the first full pay period after 1 July 2026, and the official Retail Award pay guide was updated accordingly on 24 June 2026. If your rate settings were configured before that date and haven't been reviewed since, it's worth a check.

There's also more at stake in getting it wrong. Underpayment of penalty rates is one of the most common forms of wage theft in Australia, particularly in retail and hospitality. Since 1 January 2025, intentional underpayment has been a criminal offence under Commonwealth law (Fair Work Ombudsman), with fines up to $8.25 million for companies and $1.65 million plus 10 years' imprisonment for individuals. Genuine mistakes aren't captured by that law, but they still trigger back pay, interest, and civil penalties.

Common places errors creep in

  • Junior rates not updated as an employee ages into the next pay bracket
  • Casual loading missing from weekend penalty calculations rather than compounding correctly
  • Rate increases applied to base pay but not flowed through to allowances or loadings calculated from it

A quick check worth running

  1. Compare your junior, weekend, and casual loading settings against the Retail Award summary or the Pay and Conditions Tool.
  2. Run a test pay for a Saturday or Sunday shift and check the penalty rate applies correctly.
  3. Check that recent rate increases have flowed through to every affected pay item, not just the base rate.

Removing the manual step

Retail's award complexity isn't going away, and rates will keep changing. QuickBooks Payroll Advanced's pay conditions engine applies the correct rate automatically based on the shift.
