We’ve Listened: Introducing a New Design for Modern Reports—Simpler, Faster, More Customisable

This QuickBooks reporting experience continues to be improved. With this in mind, we’re excited to be rolling out a new Modern Reports experience in QuickBooks Online—a customer-inspired design that keeps everything you love about Classic Reports while making your workflow simpler and faster.

This update will be rolled out in the coming weeks to all QuickBooks Online plans including QuickBooks Online Accountant.

Why we redesigned it

Accountants and business owners told us they like the customisation of Modern Reports—but not the extra effort it sometimes takes to get results.

Key feedback included:

  • Too many steps for simple tasks like viewing a profit and loss report by month
  • Overwhelming layouts with buttons and filters scattered across the screen

What’s new in the Modern Design

1. Streamlined top panel

No more bulky header clutter. Functions like print, export, and refresh now live directly within the report area—keeping your workspace clean and focused.

2. Quick access to key actions

The most-used options, such as “Display Columns by” and “Compare Period”, are now instantly available up front. That means switching from totals to months or comparing time periods is very easy and quick.

3. Unified customisation panel

Filters, groupings, pivots—everything lives in one right-hand panel now. Select customise and you’ll find all customisation controls in a single, organized view.

We’ve intentionally designed the new Modern Reports to look and feel more like Classic Reports. For now you can still access Classic Reports, the option is now under the three-dot “More Actions” menu.

During early testing professional accountants, feedback was clear and consistent: “This feels like Classic—but better organised.”

This isn’t just a design refresh—we’ve updated Modern Reports around the way accountants and business owners actually work, ensuring that insights come faster and workflows stay simple.

In addition to this new design, here are some recent improvements we’ve made.

Some recent improvements:

  • Auto refresh of reports: Reports now automatically update after any transaction changes—no manual refresh needed. So you’ll see the latest data straight away without any extra steps.
  • Persisting customisation: QuickBooks now remembers your report customisations. Adjust dates, filters, and even layouts—then drill down into transactions and navigate back. You’ll see the same customised view—no more lost settings or rework, making analysis faster and easier.
  • Drill down into $0 accounts with transactions: You can now drill into $0 accounts that contain transactions, giving full visibility into your financials and eliminating blind spots in reporting.
  • Favouriting modern reports: You can now “favourite” key reports, which automatically appear at the top of the reporting page for quick access.
  • Multi-currency support on modern reports: Modern reports now support multiple currencies, enabling accurate tracking, reporting, and management of unrealized gains and losses across international transactions. Available for the profit and loss, balance sheet, AR/AP aging summary reports and more.
  • Custom group scheduling: You can now schedule and share entire groups of custom reports at once, saving time and ensuring consistent sharing. Supports multiple formats—PDF, XLSX, and CSV.
  • Drilldown in A/P & A/R summary reports: You can now drill directly into aging totals in A/P and A/R summary reports, making it easier to review overdue payments and receivables.
  • Removal of the ‘Save Report’ prompt: We’ve removed the pop-up asking customers to save report changes, reducing interruptions and speeding up workflows.
  • Memo/description columns: The capability to add memo/description columns has been implemented in Modern View.

Improvements expected very soon:

  • Effortless scrolling: Soon, you’ll be able to scroll through your financial reports directly at the page level. No need to hover over the table—simply scroll anywhere on the report to view it from top to bottom with ease.
  • Column widths: When you customise column widths these will now persist in modern reports.
  • Account ordering: The account order shown in classic view will soon show in modern reports. For example the General Ledger reports the ordering from Assets → Liabilities → Equity → Income → Expenses will be shown.
  • Displaying zero balance accounts: Zero balance accounts will not be displayed when printing out reports.

What’s next?

We will continue to update you on what’s happening and what’s coming next throughout the migration. It’s important to know in the near future Modern View will become the only view available and we expect to start sunsetting Classic View with non-financial reports first, followed by financial reports. We’ll keep you across any changes.
