You'll have to clear the cache of your QuickBooks Online app to boost its overall performance. Here's how:
If you continue to experience the same issue, uninstall and reinstall the application. The latter is required when QuickBooks Online app's function is damaged and only a fresh download will correct the problem.

You should be able to open a new tab smoothly.

I am also having this problem but it seems to occur some days but not others so very annoying and confusing at the same time. Is there any end in sight for a resolution as this seems to have been going on for 6 months at least.

Allow me to help share what I know about the crashing problem going on with the Desktop app in QuickBooks Online.
Let me start by saying how much I appreciate you for getting back to us with additional details. Please know that we currently have an ongoing issue (INV-31308) with regards to adding a new tab and our engineers are already working on it.
For now, the workaround available that you can use is by accessing your QuickBooks account via a supported browser. I also suggest contacting our QuickBooks Support Specialists to be part of the list of affected users.
