Error 185 for syncing to Truist

For the past several weeks I've been getting Error 185 as frequently as once a day. We bank with Truist. What is the solution other than to reconnect with the 2 step authentication every time the error occurs?  I didn't have this problem until recently, and the authentication is annoying because I have to reach out to a third party who receives the code.  Someone says there are several options when you go to initially set up the bank connection, but how does one know which one to choose?

Error 185 for syncing to Truist

@smp5501, thank you for joining the QuickBooks Community. I'm happy to assist you in resolving bank error 185 in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Before that, I would like to share some information on what type of bank error you're experiencing. Bank error 185 indicates that your bank or financial institution needs additional information after you submit your credentials. It may imply that your financial institution has further security criteria for you to meet, such as a security question or one-time passcode.

We do see what you are saying about the code, however this is something as a third party connecting to your bank via open banking connection that we do not control. The only way to resolve that error is to follow the below steps;

  1. Go to Bookkeeping, select Transactions, then click Bank Transactions (Take me there).
  2. Choose Update and follow the onscreen messages. Enter One Time Passcode when promoted.

For more details, refer to this article: Fix Standard bank feed connection errors in QuickBooks Online.

You could try setting up the connection again as a new connection by deleting and re-adding the connection (providing there are no transactions waiting to be reviewed) though you may still get asked for a passcode. You would then need to make sure you select a date range to pull in that matches up to where you had added transactions.

For additional QuickBooks-related concerns, don't hesitate to post them here in the Community. We're always available and willing to lend a hand to your queries. Have a great day ahead.
