trying to generate a report on a specific product (or item) to show which customers who have been invoiced for that item still have open balance.
We've successully generated a report, but Open Balance column shows as £0.00 whether invoice has been paid or not...
We can modify the report to only show those invoices which are unpaid, but it is not very useful as it doesnt show how much is outstanding (ie. all or part of invoice, which may be as little as a couple of dollars or euros in bank fees, or as much as the entire invoice)
can you help?

Let me guide you on what report to pull up to show those invoices that aren't paid, torturedsoul.
QuickBooks Online (QBO) lets you apply multiple filters so you'll be able to customise your report and only show the data you need. You can run the Transaction List by Customer report and filter the A/R Paid information by selecting Unpaid to show only those invoices that are open. To do this, follow the steps below:
Please check out this article for more information: Customise Reports In QuickBooks Online. I've also added this article so you'll know what reports are available for your subscription: Reports Included In Your QuickBooks Online Subscription.
Reach out to us if you have any concerns about your outstanding invoices. We're always here to make sure we get you covered.

thanks for your quick reponse
Your proposed solution does not allow us to filter by Product / Service (at best it offers Account) which is the primary objective here.
Kindly review my OP and come back to me with a suitable solution

Allow me to share some information and guide you on what you'll have to do, torturedsoul.
I can see that being able to filter on a specific product or service in that report will benefit your business needs. However the suggested solution I've provided above is somewhat an alternative since filtering products and services in that report isn't possible as of the moment. You may want to look at the transaction detail by account report as that report has the most options of columns you can add/filters.
You'll want to visit our Customer Feedback page to check if related request has already been submitted. If not, you can send feedback to let our product team know how this is useful for your business.
Furthermore, you may want to consolidate reports so you'll be able to get the information you need. Learn how to export them to Excel. I've added this article for your reference: Export Your Reports To Excel From QuickBooks Online.
Please get back to us if you have any other concerns about any of your products and services or even reports. We're always right here to further assist you. Stay safe!
Im afraid that that is an inadequate and disappointing response once again Maria Soledad
As I say we have been able to generate this report for at least a decade on QB Desktop
One of your standard reports in QB Online: Sales by Product/Service Detail , when customised with an Open Balance column, appears to offer to do the same job. However every single line (even when there is an open balance) shows 0.00.
This is a bug in QB Online and I would suggest that it needs to be resolved urgently.
To your final point: As a more than 20 year user of the product I am very aware that one can export to Excel, but thanks for the explanatory link. However exporting a report with inadequate data still leaves us in the same position, with inadequate data for the purpose we require.
Your recommendation that we try consolidating multiple reports would mean us doing such an extraordinary amount of coding work ourselves, so that we question what is the point of QB Online?
In the meantime please urgently find someone in your tech dept. who can perform an interim fix for us so we can get our report
thanks
