Hi- I reconnected my bank and seem to have duplicated my bank accounts. I have the Original 'Current' 'Savings' etc however also now 'Current 4' etc Can they be removed?

Yes, your duplicate bank accounts can be removed in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @Charlie Pilkington. I'm here to show you how.

When you have duplicate accounts, you can merge them in QBO. This moves all the data into the one you want to keep and removes the duplicate. Keeping your lists clean and makes bookkeeping easier.

Before doing so, please know that merging accounts is permanent. However, since they are connected to online banking, they can't be merged or deleted. With this, I'd recommend disconnecting them to online banking temporarily. To do this, here's how:

  1. Go to Bookkeeping, select Transactions, then select Banking.
  2. Select the tile for the bank account.
  3. Click the Pencil ✎ icon, then select Edit account info.
  4. Select the Disconnect this account on save checkbox.
  5. Choose Save and CloseDisconnect Bank Account (QBO).PNG

Then, go ahead and merge your duplicate accounts. Here's how:

  1. If you're merging accounts that have reconciliation reports, save those reports first. The transactions remain on the merged account and stay reconciled.
  2. Go to the Gear icon and then select the Chart of Accounts.
  3. Find the account you want to keep. Then, select the dropdown arrow in the Action column and then Edit80.PNG
  4. Note the Account Type, Name, and Detail Type of the account. These must be the same between the accounts you want to merge.
  5. Check if the Is sub-account option is marked. If it is, note the parent account it's tied to.

When you have all the info you need for the account you want to keep, it's time to handle the duplicate. For the step-by-step guide, please refer to this article's Merge duplicate accounts section: Merge duplicate accounts, customers, and suppliers in QuickBooks Online.

Once you're done, reconnect your bank account so you can automatically download your most recent transactions. To learn more about this, please see this article: Connect your bank feeds using Open Banking.

Also, I would encourage you to reconcile your accounts every month. This ensures your QuickBooks accounts are accurate and updated. For the complete guide from connecting your account to matching bank transactions and reconciliation, I'd recommend checking out this article: Online Banking guide for QuickBooks Online.

Let me know in the comments if there's anything else you need or concerns about managing bank accounts and transactions in QBO. I'll gladly help. Take care, and I wish you continued success, @Charlie Pilkington.
