MAny thanks for your reply. I have tried this already but it makes no difference. the ref. no. box still says "bacs a3 window" by default when I go to pay a bill

Yes it is still there as soon as I go to pay a bill even though the last time I went into pay a bill I overtyped with a different narrative etc.

Could you please try clearing cache and cookies? (If you are unsure how to do this, you may need to search how you can do it on your specific browser). You will need to do this for 'All time'. Once you have done this, refresh QuickBooks and try to create a bill payment again.
Please let us know if this stops the auto-filling.

Thanks for this suggestion.
However, the box is always populated whichever computer I use to log in to QB online and also if any other user logs in, irrelevant of which computer or device is used, this box is still populated.
This would suggest that it is nothing to do with cache or cookies?
