Hi Richard,

You'll want to check your accounting period in the HMRC and then in QuickBooks, and be sure they match.

In QuickBooks:

  1. Go to Taxes.
  2. In the VAT page, click the Status drop-down list and choose Open.
  3. Click the Submit return link.
  4. Check the Accounting period, and choose the correct period from the drop-down list.

Please let me know if there's anything that I can help you with.

I've gone to the VAT page, but can't see a 'status' drop down.

The return (Feb, Mar, Apr) is showing in the list as 'submitted', and the open return in the list is the May/Jun/Jul quarter, which is current.

When I select 'Edit HMRC VAT' and then 'edit settings', it shows the 'start of current VAT period' as 'February', which is incorrect.

Basically, QuickBooks is out of synch with itself!

Hi richard23

The 'start of the current VAT period' will always show as February as that was the beginning of your first period, it will not update. The open period date range on the initial taxes page will change as you have stated.

Ok, so should I just ignore all the warnings when I submitted my return telling me that I needed to resubmit it? Is that normal behaviour?

I am also having this issue. I just signed up for MTD and didn't have a problem with it before now. I submitted my VAT return for the period ending May 2019 and when I click on the error, I see this: "Submit this return to update HMRC for the period 01/03/2019 - 31/05/2019. All open returns with HMRC must be submitted before your current VAT return." I'm not sure how this is possible considering I just submitted it and it's showing its status as submitted.

See screenshots which show the error (that I've apparently not submitted the return) and then the confirmation that I have submitted the return...

For what its worth - I never got a resolution for this.

I went back into QuickBooks the next day and the message had stopped showing, so I wasn't able to get  screenshot. Support never followed up with me, or gave an explanation.

However, my VAT return did get submitted. Though I wasn't able to get confirmation via QuickBooks, I did confirm via HMRC.

There seems quite a few bugs like this with the process. Unfortunately I haven't had much support. I've had lots of cust services contact asking me why I'm frustrated. I tell them, then there's silence...

Anyway, from my experience, this is a bug that can be ignored. But - don't rely on me, best to check with HMRC.

Hello Magic Breakfast

Looking at the screen shot you provided we can see that you submitted this today via MTD. It will take a few days for it to show at HMRC side that there are no open returns once you have filed via this process. If this has not updated in the next 72 hours reply back here and we can then look into this further for you

Thanks

Emma

Hello Richard123

We are sorry about the experience you have had with this. We have been advised it takes a while to update that the return is no longer open.It has been a bit of a learning curve with MTD and we apologise that you did not get the support we would expect.Feel free to reach out here with any questions you may have.
