We appreciate you selecting QuickBooks Online (QBO) Payroll Core for handling your employees' payroll, Gec. Let me assist you in marking the employee as a leaver and how you'll be able to calculate the redundancy in the final pay.

First off, we'll add the reimbursement pay type to the worker's profile and use it to track the redundancy.

  1. Head to the Payroll menu on the left panel and choose Employees.
  2. From the list, click on the worker's name to view more details.
  3. Navigate to the Pay types section and tap the Edit link to open the Edit pay types screen.
  4. Select the Additional pay types option and tick the Reimbursement box.
  5. Enter the payroll item's name in the field, like Redundancy.
  6. Fill in the remaining box.
  7. Press the Save button to keep the changes.

The newly created payroll item is included on the employee's record. In regard to the calculation, use the redundancy pay calculator to work out payments.

Next, mark the worker as a leaver and run the final payroll. Make sure to add the redundancy payment to the paycheque. For detailed instructions, perform Steps 1 to 3 in this article: Issuing P45 forms in QuickBooks Online Core Payroll.

This is helpful but I see the following warning when following your steps to making the employee redundant:

You can't pay an employee after they are terminated, even if their leaving date is in the future.

Does this mean that I set up the redundancy payment, then run the payroll, and only after that do I change their status to terminated? It seems odd to do the calculation before the system knows that this is the final payment?

Hi gec357-gmail-com We appreciate that the article provided can be confusing and have requested that the content is updated. You would have to, as you have alluded to, include the employee in the payrun and add or amend any payments accordingly, run the payroll, change the status of the employee to terminated and then submit the FPS.
