Quickbooks is assessing employee contributions pensionable pay correctly
It has decided that pensionable pay for employers contributions is 0

Please check that the Employer Pensionalble option is showing ticked on the SMP pay category by going to Payroll settings > Pay categories > Scroll down to the SMP category and click to expand.

It turned out I needed to go into the salary category and tick the employer's pension box for that as well
The other staff are now correct going forward but it was still assessing employer contributions on the SMP as 0.
I then went in again to the SMP on the employee and ticked the Pension Protection Box and inserted the employers contribution amount in there and it then shows up on the reports.
