Making Tax Digital issues- not connecting despite everything being right!

Hello

I wondered if anyone would be able to assist please. I have used Quickbooks for the past 3 years no problem and submitted my VAT returns with them too. I went to submit this month's return and it says it is not connected. I have done all the troubleshooting they suggest, definitely signed up, correct tax number etc. I then contacted HMRC to see if it was an issue at their end. When trying to applying online it said my business didn't exist, despite taking VAT from me for the past 15 years! I spoke with Quickbooks engineers who said they don't see why there is an issue from their end as everything is correct and to contact HMRC. Finally managed to speak to someone in person at HMRC and they confirmed that yes we do exist, we are signed up for MTD and all looks well from their end and they don't see why there are any issues. I logged into HMRC to give permissions to Quickbooks again and then went into my QB account to disconnect and reconnect to HMRC. However it is still not working. Has anyone had a similar issue? Both don't understand why there is any issue (either do I!) I need to submit VAT this week so HMRC helpful suggestion was to try another software to submit this month and hope it is sorted by next return. That would involve inputting 3 months of information again which just doesn't seem a logical solution. If anyone has experience of this or any advice it would be greatly appreciated as I am just going round in circles and getting nowhere!

Thanks

Making Tax Digital issues- not connecting despite everything being right!

Welcome to the Community space, Elcie2122.

I recognize the significance of submitting your VAT return on time. I also appreciate you taking the time to do all of the troubleshooting steps to fix this.

I need to gather more information in order to provide the best solution to this problem. You've mentioned that you went into your QuickBooks Online account to disconnect and reconnect to Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC). May I ask if you do this under the Taxes menu or in the Advanced setting?

Since HMRC requires that you re-authorize QuickBooks every 18 months when you enable Making Tax Digital (MTD). If you disconnect and reconnect via the Taxes menu, I recommend doing so in the Advanced settings. This should refresh their connection.

Before proceeding, please log in to your QuickBooks Online account using a private or incognito window. This mode bypasses the existing cache data and assists us in confirming browser-related issues. Here are the shortcut keys to use:

  • For Google Chrome browser: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • For Mozilla Firefox browser: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • For Safari browser: Command + Option + P

Once you're sign in, please follow these steps to disconnect and reconnect via Advanced settings:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then Account and Settings.
  2. Select Advanced.
  3. Click Making Tax Digital to expand the section and select Learn how to disconnect.
  4. Choose Continue.
  5. Hit Disconnect to confirm.
  6. Select Continue to return to QuickBooks Online.

Then, you can follow these steps to authorise QuickBooks to connect with HMRC:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then Account and Settings
  2. Select Advanced.
  3. Click the Making Tax Digital header to expand the section and select Learn how to connect.
  4. Hit Let's go and follow the instructions.
  5. You'll be directed to the HMRC page.
  6. Click Continue to sign in.
  7. Enter your MTD user ID and password to sign in.
  8. Select on Grant authority to continue, and the authorisation process will begin.
  9. Once you complete the authorisation process, you'll see a message "You're connected to HMRC".
  10. Click Continue.

If the issue persists, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Online Support again. They can pull up your account and submit a ticket for further investigation.
