how do i back date last years sales records, without exceptions showing on my vat return,
i started backdating 2 months ago
was fine, put now i have filled a vat return
there is a exception for everything i backdate?
Hello JPC4, Thanks for posting on the Community page, there is no way to stop it showing the backdated entries as expectations now that you have filed a return in the account. Anything you enter in that’s backdated will always now up come as an exception for you on your vat return.
what do you suggest i do ?
continue and just
get them removed?
thanks
Hello JCP4, so you can continue to enter the backdated information and then we can remove any exceptions from anything that is dated before the first filed period in your QuickBooks Online account.
Hello Community Users, we just wanted to add some clarity on VAT exceptions and adjustments in QuickBooks.
When backdating transactions, if you have you already claimed VAT on them in a previous software and you're just adding them to have history for your customer/suppliers. Then we may need to remove the exceptions, or your return will be incorrect.
If they have not been in a VAT return, then you could keep the exceptions as they are as they would be correct. More information can be found here on exceptions
If you are adding them to claim the amounts only (for example previously purchased equipment for the business) and it is the first return in QuickBooks, you would just use the adjustment option on the return and amend the relevant box by the amount and leave a note. Here is an article on how to do VAT adjustments in QuickBooks. We'd recommend confirming any adjustments on the VAT return boxes with an accountant.
Any questions feel free to add them here.
Hi
I have the same issue, as I am trying to add previous year sales and expenses which have already been submitted to HMRC with another software , but QuickBooks add them to current vat return period in exceptions. How I can delete them or maybe I have to change something in Quickbooks settings? Thank you
Hello, @Katerina1990. I'm here to help.
When you enter backdated sales in QuickBooks Online (QBO) UK, they will be marked as exceptions on your VAT return. Exceptions are created when you amend transactions that have already been included in a VAT return within QBO. It is advisable to retain these exceptions only if they have not been included in a VAT return. For now, I recommend removing the exceptions. Here are the steps you can follow:
Please note that it's best to consult an accountant while performing the steps above to ensure accurate financial records.
As a future reference, let me add this guide about correcting an invoice created without VAT in QBO: Correct invoices created without VAT in QuickBooks Online.
If you have any further questions about handling VAT exceptions in QBO, please don't hesitate to ask. We're here to help. Stay well!
Hello,
Thank you for your reply. You mentioned that Exceptions are created when you amend transactions that have already been included in a VAT return within QBO. However, I'm trying to add Sales and Expenses in QuickBooks for the previous tax year, that have already been submitted in a VAT return with another software called EasyMTD. I did my first VAT return in QuickBooks for the period August-October 2023. But now I need to include all transactions for 2022 year (in order to do a company tax return for the year 2022-2023). So does your instruction remain the same? As I understood I have to contact support team to remove the exceptions that appears in my current VAT return?
Many thanks
Hi Katerina1990, that's right. VAT exceptions are caused when you amend transactions that have already been included in a VAT return within QBO, as well as when you add transactions with VAT that are dated before your open VAT return in QB (e.g. filed before joining QuickBooks).
You can contact our support team for QuickBooks Online by chat or on 0808 234 5337 (M-F 8 AM - 7 PM, free from UK mobile & landlines). They'll be able to request the removal of the VAT exceptions with our higher support team. Thanks :)
Hi
Thank you for your reply and information how to contact support team. Hope everything will be sorted.
