We can't connect to HMRC right now!

Hello, I have been unable to submit by VAT return through Making Tax Digital for over a week with the warning 'We can't connect to HMRC right now'.  I have gone through all of the trouble shooting advice and have not been able to resolve this. Is this a problem anyone else is having? Does anyone have advice of how I might fix it. I have been using the MTD portal without problems since 2019 so at a bit of a loss.

Hi JP139, thanks for joining the QB Community - we'll be happy to help get to the bottom of this for you. We don't currently have any reported issues with MTD filings in QuickBooks, and there is currently no scheduled HMRC downtime for the service. Does any specific prompt show when selecting the 'take action' button on your VAT dashboard, and are you able to log into your gateway directly with HMRC as usual? 🧐

Hi, it asked me to reauthorise which I did a few days ago and is now suggesting I check three things

- Have I signed up? Which I have because I have been using it since 2019

- Did I get a sign up email? Which I did back in 2019

- Does my VAT number match HMRC's records? I have double checked this and it does.

I am being advised of error code 'CLIENT_OR_AGENT_NOT_AUTHORISED' but wanted to make sure it was just a problem with my account before I contacted HMRC.

Before anything else, know that I recognise the urgency of this matter and I'm determined to help you get this sorted out as soon as possible. As I've checked here on my resources, there's an ongoing investigation regarding this matter. I'd recommend contacting the HMRC so they can add you to the list of affected users. You'll then receive an update from them once it's already fixed.

We can't connect to HMRC right now!

Hi I'm having the same problem/getting the same message and although I successfully activated MTD in the autumn and HMRC took a DD payment in October, my VAT tax reports are not showing this... I have been through the troubleshoot with no success. If I disconnect MTD and reconnect to see if that works, will I need to find an authorisation code?

As provided by my colleague KurtKyle_M above, there's an ongoing investigation regarding this matter. I've checked here on my end, and it's still in progress. Please know that our team is aware of this matter and is currently implementing measures to fix it.

 

With this, you can reach out to our QuickBooks Online Support Team to add your account details to the list of affected users. Rest assured, you'll be notified via email once the issue is resolved.

 

You can also work with them with regards to disconnecting and reconnecting MTD to find an authorisation code.

Thanks, but the online support bot is not providing useful information to help me resolve this, or to add my case to the HMRC's list of affected QB users. What will happen if I simply toggle to disable the MTD function, then toggle back to enable? Will I be asked for a new authorisation code or something?

I understand how eager you are to have this settled, @Scumboni.

 

I know that you've encountered difficulties and that this is not the kind of experience we would want for you.

 

If you disable the MTD feature and then toggle back to enable it, you will only need to go through setting up the MTD feature in QuickBooks Online and reconnecting to HMRC to be authorized to submit VAT returns in an MTD-compliant manner.

 

However, even if you repeat the process, you still can't connect to HMRC because an investigation into this matter is still ongoing, as provided by my colleagues KurtKyle_M and Carneil_C. I've also checked here on my end, and it's still in progress. I recommend contacting our live support team again to be added to the list of affected users and to receive email updates on this case.

 

Regarding the links you're referring to, you may want to use a private window or other supported browsers to open them.
