I tried adding the .ptb file to the file where it says save as when downloading, to no avail

You need to utilize the trial version for Sage to restore your backup file. Another option, you can purchase a 3rd party conversion service to convert your Sage backup file to QB Online. You don't have to bother installing Sage 50 on your machine.
