My expenses are all getting disallowed and I can't change them!

Im in the entertainment industry and I am allowed to claim back on theatre tickets etc as research and and obviously meals and entertainment for networking and trying to arrange work etc. However virtually all of it is being categorised as disallowed, even when I change some of them to 50% split (I think that's the new rule?).

How can `I move them?

It's nice to see you in the Community, Douglas.

I recognize the importance of classifying transactions into the correct category type. This ensures your records are accurate and you can process the tax return seamlessly.

To better assist you, I'll have to gather more information about your concern. May I know if the theatre tickets should be classified as allowable or disallowable? Can you tell us where are you going to move the entries?

Any details you provide will ensure the best resolution. I'll be on the lookout for your reply, Douglas. Have a good one.

My expenses are all getting disallowed and I can't change them!

I am allowed to claim back expenses for haircuts and theatre tickets and ive been categorising them as "other expenses". does that work or should i put them in different categories?

All my "meals and entertainment" expenses are automatically getting categorised as "disallowed" and im not sure how to fix that. Also i have been putting them as 50/50 for personal- is the Govs new 50% limit for meals and entertainment in place for this tax year or is it next?

thanks for the help!

Thanks for getting back into this thread and providing additional details about your concern, Douglas. I'd be delighted to share some troubleshooting steps to fix the issue regarding your incorrectly automatically categorised transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE).

One possible reason your transactions are being categorised automatically is that you have set up a bank rule to help you review your transactions. That said, you'll want to review it first by following the steps below:

  1. Go to Settings ⚙.
  2. Click Create rules.
  3. Review the rules you've created, then tap Edit if necessary.

However, if everything's fine with your bank rules, let's try accessing your QBSE account through an incognito window to determine if it's a browser-related issue. Here are the shortcut keys:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl Shift
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl Shift P
  • Safari: press Command Shift N

Once you're in incognito mode, review your bank transactions again. If it works, you can use your regular browser to clear the cache to improve the program's performance. Otherwise, using other supported browsers can be a good alternative too.

Regarding your categories, you can keep utilizing what you've been doing, but it would be best if you'd reach out to your accountant to ensure that your books are accurate. They have the best knowledge of self-employment accounting. You can also check out this article for more information: Allowable and disallowable expenses explained.

Furthermore, you can ask your accountant directly or contact HMRC about the categorisation portion of your transactions, so it will be properly tracked in the relevant line of your Schedule C.

Additionally, visit this resource to see different information on how QBSE tracks your business income and taxes: QuickBooks Self-Employed Overview.

Please let me know how it goes after trying these recommendations to fix the categorisation of your transactions by dropping a comment below. I'm always here to provide additional assistance. Have a great day!
