Hello @Sahananda,

There are instances where your browser is full of frequently-accessed page resources, thus causing websites, like QuickBooks Online (QBO), to act weirdly. This can be the reason why you're unable to save a split transaction.

First off, have you received an error message? Let's consider logging into your QBO account using a private browser so we can isolate this issue. To do so:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl Shift N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl Shift P
  • Safari: Command Option P

If this works, you can clear your regular browser's cache so the system can start fresh. But if you get the same results while using a private browser, use a different browser app instead.

Lastly, here are articles you can read for ideas about how you can review a transaction in your account register: Find, review, and edit transactions in account registers.

If there's anything else that I can help you with, let me know in the comments. I'll be here to help.

Hi JonpriL,

thank you for taking an interest in my problem.  I'm afraid I did not explain it well due to the constraints of the 130 character submission form.  I note that I appear to be on the US forum, though I meant to post on the UK forum.

Since posting I have searched the forum more widely, and see that the problem I am experiencing is also experienced by many others.  It turns out that the UK Paypal feed has been significantly broken since an update six months ago, such that it imports the wrong values for transactions from Paypal.  It seems that many people have reported this problem and the responses seem to mainly be were working on it, be patient, use a barely adequate workaround.  What is more, it appears that their problem tickets are routinely closed prematurely even though the problem has not been fixed.

So, what is wrong with the transactions?  Let's say we have a deposit of £10 and Paypal has deducted a fee of £1.  The balance of the account is increased by £9, but the transaction is for £10.  If I review the transaction which has one line value £10 and split it and add another line for -£1 against our fees account, then the post (save) button is disabled as the transaction is not in balance.  I cannot find a way, through the interface to correct the transaction total brought across.

My desired outcome would be to have one transaction with two lines, so that I can later see what fee applied to which line.  The work-around suggested to the unfortunate users as I understand it is to download your transactions from Paypal, filter out the fee transactions and then upload them to QBO.  It seems that this often leads to duplicate transactions that need to be hunted down and deleted.  It is also inadequate to my needs because you lose the linkage between the transaction and the fee.

For myself, I think I will disconnect the Paypal account and manually enter the transactions as I have been doing on QB desktop.  The QBO interface seems less usable, but perhaps I will become more familiar with it.  If after a month or two this problem has not been solved (and given the lack of progress so far this seems likely) I will have to evaluate whether QBO is worth the bother.

I would also apologise if this reply lacks detail or is unclear.  I spent an hour carefully explaining, but when I pressed the post button an 'unexpected error' occurred and my post was lost.

Hello Sahananda:smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:, Thank you for your post. It is the case that the Paypal fees are not being interpreted correctly in the banking connection and this is something the banking team has been working on to resolve. The workaround is something that can be used in the meantime we appreciate it is not ideal if you want to show a connection to the fees on the one transaction. We want to reassure you it's a priority to get this resolved and the banking team has been working with Paypal to expedite this.
