Hi Everyone
For the past 2 months Quickbooks support people have tried to transfer my data from my company files that exist on my version on Quickbooks ie Quickbooks Regular 2005 which is running absolutely fine on my PC running Windows 7.
That's no problem to me because Quickbooks Regular 2005 is running fine on my Win 7 PC. My problem exists in that I have a new PC that runs Windows 10 and I have installed Quicbooks 2005 on it without a problem using compatibility mode. When I come to open my saved company file latest.qbw a message comes up stating that the software needs updating and then it trips up. I have tried all the Quickbooks tools to help with getting it to work but nothing makes it run.
I'm going to try a clean install again later today and will take screen shots of every stage of the install and will post them on here. Is there anything you can suggest I do before I try this new install?
By the way we are absolutely fine using Quickbooks 2005 as we are not VAT registered and use the software mainly for creating invoices and keeping a record of sales.
Any help would be much appreciated :)

Hi Guys
Just a quick message to let you know that I have solved this by creating a virtual machine on my Windows 10 computer. Into this I have loaded a clone of my Windows 7 computer on which runs Quickbooks 2005. All is up and running great.
I will now mark this thread as solved.
Thanks to all who offered help.
Happy New Year to you all
Hello Brimo1, If you follow the full process for the clean install here and get back to us if you have the same issue about the software pops up.-Emma

You did a great job when installing your outdated version on compatibility mode Win 7. But I confused what kind of message you have encountered asking to update your QuickBooks. Can you take and share the screenshot of it?
OK guys, I deleted the old installation that wouldn't update and ran an install from the QB's CD run in Windows Compatablity mode Windows XP (Service Pack 3). Quickbooks 2005 Installed OK and ran the Sample company ie Grangeworth Kitchens.
I then thought that now would be the time to restore a backup I made from my other computer which is running Windows 7 and has my running version of Quickbooks 2005.
The following screenshots will describe what happened next...
The first photo shows the message I got when I went to restore my company file. It was telling me that Quickbooks need to be updated.
The second photo shows the screen I got when I closed the first box and then clicked "Update Quickbooks" under File.
The 3rd shot shows the update screen then I clicked "Update Now" It did do something minor but then I got the last screen which is where I am up to now and have been before.
I have just discovered that I can only upload one photo so I have uploaded the last screen showing the error. I have googled the error and its telling me that its a connection issue. There is nothing wrong with my connection.
To be honest if I could stop Quickbooks from wanting to update itself I'd probably be OK as I'm happy with the way this version of QB works for me.
No screenshot showing on previous post so here they are again. The first one here is the final one I got which is showing an error. The next one is the first one mentioned in the earlier post. Followed by No 2 screenshot and then No 3.
Thanks for the screenshots and for providing information on what's happening when you upgrade QuickBooks, brimo1.
Since we no longer support older versions like QuickBooks Desktop 2005, you can go back to Windows 7. This is for you to continue using the program.
If not, you can purchase and download the latest version of QuickBooks to your new computer. Then, restore the old file from there.
Here is what you need to make sure QuickBooks will run on your Windows 10 computer:
After downloading your chosen plan, you can install and activate it. If you need assistance in installing the software, I suggest contacting our Support Team. They can do screen-sharing with you in a secure environment.
Here's how to contact them:

Hi MarylandT
My apologies because I didn't explain clearly at the beginning of my first post that for about 6 weeks or more the Support team have been trying to transfer my company data from my Quickbooks 2005 to Quickbooks Online and haven't been able to do it at all. I have just cancelled my monthly subscription because I'm no further ahead yesterday than I was when I first contacted Quickbooks.
That's the reason I'm simply trying to get QB 2005 to work on my new Windows 10 PC. I don't need the all singing all dancing latest online version of QB's I just need to get my old version working.
Thank you for getting back to us and providing us more information about this concern, @brimo1.
I understand that you're trying to open QuickBooks Desktop 2005 in your Windows 10 PC, and don't have any plans to get the latest versions that work with it.
QuickBooks Desktop 2005 is no longer supported, so I can no longer provide the operating system, hardware, software, and other requirements to run QuickBooks Desktop 2005 perfectly. As mentioned by MarylandT, you can go back to your Windows 7 PC to make it work.
Let me know if you still have questions. I'm always here to answer them for you. Have a great rest of the day!
Your installer file of QBD 2005 is still Release 1 and your file has been updated to higher Release version. I am not sure you are able to update it by online. You may have have 3 options:
1. Contact Support and ask the installer file of QBD 2005 with the latest Release version.
2. Migrate to QB Online UK version. You will need a 3rd party service to migrate your old file.
3. Upgrade to QBD UK 2021 is not an option for your case. You may consider cross-grading to QB Desktop 2021 US version with a one time license. You will need a 3rd party service to migrate your file.
Thanks for your reply MaryjoyD - I already have QB's working fine on my Win 7 PC but what I don't want is a situation where I have to run two PC's - my new one with Win 10 on it and my old one just to run QB's :(
As stated previously I did purchase the Online QB's monthly sub but the support team couldn't transfer my stuff over to it despite their best efforts so I was left with the current situation. However, one of the support guys did say that you CAN get it to work on Win 10 because he said he had a version working there.
I did see a post somewhere, a year or so back, where someone had slowly worked his way through the different versions of Quickbooks till he reached a more modern version. I can't find the post now but I imagine he went from QB 2005 to QB 2007 then to 2011 or 2013 then to 2016 . Quite how that would be done is beyond me but someone will know somewhere.
The only other alternative would be to partition this drive on this PC and put Win 7 on it but that seems rather drastic to me.
Thanks Fiat Lux
I will ask UK Support for that release version. As stated previously I have already tried the Quickbooks Online UK version but the support team could not transfer my data over.

If you can find the trial license of QBD 2010 and 2015, you may open the converted file later on the trial license of QBD 2021 prior to migrating to QB Online.

They won't help to migrate data from QB Desktop file to QB Online. A 3rd party migration service is an option.

Thanks for that - where am I likely to find those trial versions?

Googling is the best option. We only keep the trial licenses of QBD US version.
