I am running the standard budget v actual report with variances in QBO. Where expenditure is greater than budget the variance shows as negative (red) which is fine, but on the income side where the income is less than the budget it shows as positive (black), whereas as it is adverse I would expect it to show red. Am I missing something?
Hello there, @MikeB23.
Thanks for visiting the Community space. I'll share some insight about how Budgets Vs. Actuals report works in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
The main purpose of the red amounts are for you to recognize all of the negative amounts within your reports.
However, the period comparison you've selected will also have an impact on the report. You'll want to double-check the report's customisation to ensure you've chosen the correct one.
See this screenshot for example:
Additionally, you can filter your reports to focus on the details that matter to you the most. Doing so will let you show specific accounts or format the layout to get the data you need. To learn more about this process, you can refer to this article: Customise reports in QuickBooks Online.

I understand how it works, my point is - its not the way a standard business variances report should work. Managers need to see adverse figures highlighted (red), i.e. negative variances on income and positive variances (overspend) on expenditure. Can I submit this as a feature request, to have a new option for reporting called "Show Variances", which works this way.
Hi MikeB23, we will be sure to pass this on as a new feature request, if you can also leave this as feedback within the main cog well as well thanks.
