For various reasons, we want to use the general journal entry for certain transactions and we would like to record the VAT of the particular entries.
How to we go about doing this?
Do we need to choose the VAT liability account?
Do we need to choose a VAT Item?
Which VAT Item do we choose?
Does anyone have detailed instructions with various scenarios on the above questions?
Thank you.

Its normally not good to post by journal to vat liability as there are transactions available in the product to handle nearly everything you need and it does it well and no mistakes.
However in saying this there is in desktop and option available.
If its for normal sales then it quite simple.
You have to choose the vat control account and the vat agency should appear in name column.
Select the vat item you wish to use to post to the correct vat boxes. This is under Vat item column.
Run vat unassigned vat report afterwards to show if you have posted correctly.
If you tell us what you are trying to post we probably can show you how to use desktop to get the result you want .

I am trying to do a journal
Credit Sales £100
Credit VAT £20
Debit Cash £120
The VAT I can get to go to box 1 on the VAT return by posting to the VAT control account and setting the VAT ITEM column to 'VAT (1) On Sales'
However I can't find a way of getting the Credit Sales £100 to appear in Box 6 on the VAT return.
Would be grateful if you have a solution to this.
Many thanks
Hello AJ14
If you want the line to appear in box 6 as net sale to box 6 you can use this Community page to determine which code to use for that. We would advise just to confirm with your accountant if you are doing journal entries to affect the boxes on the return.
Thanks
Emma
