VAT detail report - how do I include transaction descriptions? Otherwise it's just a list of meaningless numbers.

Hello @gordon-maughan,

The memo/description column in the VAT detail report will only display the transaction's memo field. You'll want to pull up two reports the product/service list and VAT detail report. Then, export them to Excel and filter them manually. Let me walk you through how.

  1. Go to Reports, then Product/Service List.
  2. Click Customize, then mark the boxes next to Tax Amount and VAT Code.
  3. Hit Run report.
  4. Follow step 1 and open the VAT Detail Report.

Once done, export both reports in Excel. Just click the Export icon in each report. You can learn more about exporting at this link here: Export your reports to Excel from QuickBooks Online.

We also have a guide on "VAT: Getting Started" that I'm sure you'll find helpful. It has information that keeps your tax record accurate.

I know this is not your fault, but what good is a report without any descriptions - this is pretty basic stuff. It shouldn't need a manual fix each time, for a basic requirement that all other systems seem to provide. QB fails on so many counts compared to the competition.

Thanks for joining in on this discussion.

Currently, we're unable to add another column in the VAT Detail report in QuickBooks Online (QBO) to display your preferred categories.

In the meantime, you'll want to export it to Excel so you can manually enter it from there.

I appreciate you for pitching your concern here in the Community. While this feature is unavailable, I'd recommend sending your feature request directly to our software engineers. They will review your suggestion and might consider incorporating it in our future product enhancements.

To do that:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Under Profile, select Feedback.
  3. Enter a brief description of your suggestion and click Next.

Furthermore, you can memorise a report in QBO to save the current customisation settings of your reports.

Let me know if you have additional questions about customising a report. I'm always available to attend to your concerns. Take care, and have a good one.
