Why isn’t mileage expense showing up on reports or expenses?

I have recorded my mileage which has worked and is available to see on the mileage tab. But when I look at expenses tab or run a report the mileage expenses do not show up. Other expenses are there to see, but not mileage.

Why isn’t mileage expense showing up on reports or expenses?

Hi @artymuir,

Mileage isn't considered an expense, which is why it isn't showing up on your reports relating to expenses. It's a detailed log of all the business miles you can deduct during tax time.

If you'd like to track it as an expense, you'll have to create an expense account first.

Here's how:

  1. Highlight the Accounting tab, then select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Tap the New button.
  3. Create a new expense account.
  4. You can set the Account Type to Expenses, and the Detail Type to Auto or Travel.
  5. Name the expense account.
  6. Hit Save and Close when done.

Next, you'll need to create a product item for mileage. Follow these steps:

  1. Highlight the Sales tab, then select Products and Services.
  2. Tap the New button, choose Non-stock.
  3. You can use the name Manual mileage, or whichever name you wish.
  4. Tick the I sell this product/service to my customers option. Type in a description for it.
  5. Tick the I purchase this product/service from a supplier, then enter a description as well.
  6. On the Expense account drop-down menu, select the expense account you created from the steps above.
  7. Click Save and close when done.

If you want to track mileage as a billable expense, take a look at this article right here: Manually track mileage for multiple vehicles. Look for the Create an invoice to track mileage section.
