How do I deduct money from an invoice?

Thanks for getting back to us laurentofield97- there's no specific feature for customer discounts in QuickBooks Self-Employed, instead, you can add an additional line on the invoice for this by selecting 'Add work', in the description enter discount (or how you wish this to appear) and enter the discount amount with a minus figure, i.e. - 5.00. You'll then see this deducted from the total of the invoice. :)

How do I deduct money from an invoice?

Hello, laurentofield97-, Thanks for reaching out to the Community. The money you would like to deduct from an invoice,is this a discount to the customer or are you talking about a fee you want to deduct from what has been received to pay the invoice(such as a PayPal fee?)

How do I deduct money from an invoice?

Thank you for the quick response! It just says ‘enter a valid amount’ in red.

I’ve always done this and works perfectly for my use - however it doesn’t seem to allow it anymore? This was from the iOS app if that’s any use - thank you!

Nice to have you in the Community space, Aydin.

Allow me to step in and share some information on how to add a discount to an invoice in your QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) account.

You'll want to add a line item in your invoice as a negative amount for the discount. Let me show you how:

  1. Go to the Invoices menu.
  2. Choose Create Invoice.
  3. Enter the name of your customer and the details of the invoice.
  4. Add a line item for the discount with a negative amount.
  5. Tap Save as draft or Email to send it to your customer.

I've also added these resources that you can use for guidance in your future tasks:

Keep me posted if you have other follow-up questions about invoices. I'll be around to back you up. Stay safe and have a good one!

Thank you for adding more details about your concern Aydin.

The information you provided will guide us on how to resolve the issue. Let’s run some basic troubleshooting steps to help you enter a negative amount on the invoice.

Before proceeding, make sure that the Invoices feature is already activated. To check, go to the Gear icon and see if the Invoicing slider is located to the right (green color).invoice qbse.png

When visiting websites, your browser holds the stored data and can cause unusual behaviors in QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE). To test if a webpage is preventing you from accomplishing the task above, open your company using the incognito mode or private window. This type of session does not save any browsing history and helps the program to run a lot smoother.

Here are the shortcut keys to bring up private browsing:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

If you’ve successfully added the negative amount to the sales transaction, clear the cache of your regular browser to enhance its overall performance. If none of these suggestions work, utilize a supported browser when accessing QBSE.

You can browse this article to learn more about the Invoicing feature: Create invoices in QuickBooks Self-Employed. It includes instructions on how to mark an invoice as paid and create one using a mobile device.

Don't hesitate to touch base with me here if you need any additional assistance working on your invoices. I’ll be glad to help and get this taken care of for you.

I couldn’t do it on the app but have had to login on safari and I’ve been able to do it. The app has been updated and won’t allow a deduction

Hi there, @danfoot. I'll help you proceed to do it in your QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) app.

Since you've already updated your QBSE app, what we can do is to uninstall and reinstall the app. This helps to sync the latest product updates.

To uninstall:

  1. Hold or long press the QuickBooks Self-Employed icon.
  2. Click on the (x) and select yes to uninstall.

To install:

  1. Go to the Play or App store.
  2. Search for the QuickBooks Self-Employed app.
  3. Click on Install.

You should be able to get back on track with your business once you've done this.

In case the issue persists, you can consider reaching out to our QuickBooks Self-Employed Support team. This way, a representative can check and investigate your application to determine the root cause of the problem.

Additionally, I'll be leaving these articles for future reference:

You can always get back to me if you need further assistance with this. I'll be more than happy to have you here again. Keep safe and stay hydrated!
