A couple of workarounds to try (may or may not work - I haven't tested).
1) enter the invoice no. tag (is it <refnumber>?) in the header or footer of the docx template. I think these are carried over.
(that will probably upset the system but worth a try)
2) assuming you haven't already used all three custom fields, put one of these in the header/footer of the docx template - when the invoice runs to multiple pages, enter the invoice number into the custom field (so it's effectively shown twice on each invoice).

We have not been able to see a function in the product to do this. That is not to say there is not a way this could be done and we welcome any Community users who have found a workaround to reply to this post and share their solutions.
