Hi there, urbanreclamation.

Can you please provide screenshots of the invoice you received from a supplier? This way, I can ensure we're on the same page and share the accurate solution to fix  why the total VAT on is never 20%.

Please know that you're always welcome to post if you have any other concerns. Wishing you and your business continued success.

My invoices are a mix on childrens and adult clothing. There is no VAT on childrens clothing

Thanks for responding, @urbanreclamation. To clarify, an invoice from your supplier is called Bill in QuickBooks.

To enter these items, use the Bill and on the first line, select No VAT or Exempt in the VAT section for your children's clothing. Then, select the 20%S as the VAT code on the second line for adult clothing. You can also select Manage VAT rates to select the correct code.

Let me know if there's anything else that you need help with. We're always delighted to provide our utmost assistance.

I get that.

Sure I can change the VAT code to whatever I want but that still does not work

I need to be able to change the VAT total to the amount charged.

This must be simple as lots of invoices come with items charged at different rates

Thanks for getting back to us, @urbanreclamation,

The VAT amount calculated on the bill is based on the tax item assigned. It also depends on how you set up the item, whether it is set as taxable for purchases or not.

See this illustration:

Once you set up the children's item in the Products and Services list as non- taxable, it will not take out any taxes on the bill. Unlike if it is taxable, you will see the combined amount in the VAT section. Take a look at this screenshot:

To learn more about VAT processing, see our resource guide through this link: VAT for QuickBooks Online.

If you have any questions or clarifications, let me know in the comment. I'll be more than glad to share additional insights.

I am obviously being stupid and not explaining myself.

I purchase childrens and adult clothing from my supplier and receive an invoice with everything on one invoice

The invoice will have 50 lines of different items. Half will be zero rated and half @ 20% perhaps.

Thanks for your reply, @urbanreclamation.

QuickBooks will calculate taxes based on what’s entered on the invoice. The 20% tax is only applied to the item where it’s associated with and not to all the line items.

This is not about a bill I am sending somebody. It is about an invoice I have received for goods I have Purchased

Hi there, urbanreclamation.

I suggest contacting our QuickBooks Support Team. They have the tools like screen sharing to check your account and investigate the cause of why the children's clothing shows no vat and the others have 20% vat.

Here's how:

1. Open your QuickBooks Account.

2. At the top right, click the Help icon.

3. Click Contact Us.

4. Under What can we help you with?, enter any concerns.

5. Click Let's Talk.

6. You'll be routed into the Choose a way to connect with us page.

7. Select how you want to contact them and fill in the information.

Please check this article how QuickBooks Online helps you automate your tax tracking to keep accurate records of the tax that you collect and pay: VAT: Getting Started.

Please let me know if you have other questions related with QuickBooks. I'm always here to help.

This is hilarious, I've just had a 3 1/2 live chat conversation on quickbooks about this exact issue I'm having too. Did you ever get a decent answer?
