I appreciate you for reaching out to us here in the Community. Allow me to step in and provide some information about uploading receipts in QuickBooks Online.
QuickBooks Online reads the receipts, extracts the information, and automatically matches the receipt to a transaction. If you're not able to assign the cost of sales, you'll need to create a new transaction for that receipt and match it. For additional reference, you can use the following article to learn how to email receipts or bills to QuickBooks: Upload your receipts and bills to QuickBooks Online.
To become more familiar with how matching and managing receipts works in QBO, check out the following articles:
If you have any other questions about emailing your bills to QBO, let me know by adding a comment below. I'm more than happy to help. Keep safe!
Sorry but your response bears no resemblance to my question.
I'll ensure that you can allocate a transaction in your cost of sale in no time, @userrichardj-hewitt.
Allow me to explain why you're unable to assign a transaction to your cost of sale account and how to resolve this problem. Thus, I can guide you accordingly.
Ensure that the cost of sales account is active in your chart of accounts. This allows you to allocate a transaction at any time. To check, please sign in to QuickBooks Online in a browser and perform the following steps:
Once confirmed and the issue continues, I advise you to go back to your QuickBooks Application and reset it. This is the same as clearing the cache from your web browser. Let me guide you on how.
For Android devices:
For iOs:
If the issue persists, let's uninstall and reinstall the app for a clean slate. You do not need to worry since it won't delete any of your app's transactions.
Here's how:
Additionally, I've included some articles on how to match receipts and correct if there's no label and amount on the bill:
Furthermore, did you receive any error message while trying to assign the bill to your cost of sale? If yes, can you provide the exact wording of the error in detail? So, I can give you accurate information and resolution.
I look forward to hearing from you, @userrichardj-hewitt. Keep safe and healthy.

thanks for looking at this. When I said the App I meant on my Iphone. I have went through the steps and uninstalled and reinstalled it and it is still not working.
This is frustarting as the improvement made by the new release would be great and save me a lot of time, but because I can omly put to expense accounts, it becomes irrelevent.
Is there another way to update the app on my phone?
I appreciate your for getting back to us and for adding some clarifications, @userrichardj-hewitt.
I can see how efficient it is to supervise your business anywhere using our QuickBooks Online (QBO) Mobile App. In the meantime, I propose accessing your account via a regular web browser and create a bill from there. I'll show you how:
You can also read the Step 2: Review, add, or match receipts and bills section in this link for more details about the process: Upload your receipts and bills to QuickBooks Online.
Furthermore, I'd also recommend contacting our support team. This way, they can look into your account and check the reason why you're unable to add your cost of sales account when creating a bill in your QBO mobile app.
In addition, you'll want to check the App Store on your iOS device from time to time for updates on any available release. Moreover, you can also check out this article for guidance in case you need to email your receipts to your account: Email receipts and bills to QuickBooks Online.
I'm always here ready to assist you whenever you need additional help with your bills and receipts. Just leave the details in your reply and I'll take care of it for you. Keep safe!
Did you ever solve this? I'm having the same issue. trying to snap a receipt but it will only let you allocate to an expense not a COS
Hi MandyC4, thanks for joining this thread. This is currently working as designed - the app is designed for on-the-go income and expenses and as such will only show income/expense type accounts.
Thats not helpful, the client wants to capture on the go receipts, and somje of them are purchases of materials i.e. Cost of Sales - how do you suggest we can deal with this?
Hi MandyC4, they can log into the web version of QBO on their Android or iOS device (using the Chrome/Safari app) to enter expenses with the CoS category.
