Hi tina,

I can help with this one.

To mark a period as filed in QuickBooks Online without submitting said return to HMRC, you would simply need to follow the below steps.

  1. Click into the Taxes tab from the left hand navigation bar
  2. Select Submit Return on the far right of the desired VAT period
  3. When the Prepare VAT Return screen appears, confirm the dates and details are correct to what you filed with HMRC
  4. When you are happy with this, click on the drop down arrow beside Submit to HMRC and select Mark as Filed

This will file the return within QuickBooks only, closing off that period for VAT, and not duplicate your submission made directly to HMRC. If you wished to use the Online Submission feature for your future returns, you can follow the steps in our article - VAT Online Submission direct to HMRC – for guidance.

Let me know if you have any queries. Or, if you'd like to go through this over the phone, you can call our dedicated team who will be happy to assist you. Our contact details can be found here along with our opening hours.

I do not have a "Taxes" tab on the left hand tab. This is QB 2013
I had to register my VAT manually because HMRC have changed their logon procedure which will be more complex in future and will require a code word which will be messaged once you have logged in in the normal way. How will QB cope with that?

If this is for QuickBooks Desktop 2013, then I would have to suggest contacting our Desktop Support team as your query has been directed to the Online support, hence why the instructions above are not corresponding with your system. They can be contacted on 0808 168 9535 and lines are open Monday to Friday from 8am - 8pm (GMT)

Hi,

I am also trying to 'mark as filed' as I have submitted the return to HMRC separately.

However after I select mark as filed I have an error message which says 'you must click save again to make this change prior to the closing date',

I can't see a save options  I can't get past the message. Can you help?

Thanks,

Jenny

Hi there, Jenny1979.

Thanks for joining this thread. Allow me chime in and help move past the error.

You’ll have to turn off the Close the books feature, so QuickBooks will allow you to mark the tax return as filed. I’ve laid out the steps to accomplish this task.

  1. In the upper right hand, select the Gear icon.
  2. Choose Account and Settings.
  3. Select Advanced on the left panel.
  4. Click on the Pencil icon for Accounting, then unmark the box for Close the books.
  5. In the Password and Confirm Password fields, enter the correct details.
  6. Click on Save and Done.

After completing this process, go back to the open return and submit it. These steps should help mark the VAT form as filed.

Please update me on how things go. I want to make sure everything is taken care of and you're all set with this concern.
