Hello there, @hollie-gibbonbs-.

I'll help you figure out why your client's VAT page in QuickBooks Online (QBO) shows a connection error to HMRC and guide you on how you can fix it so you can get back to business in no time.

Let's start by knowing the most common reasons for the We can't connect to HMRC right now error in QBO. Check out the following:

  • You need to re-authenticate MTD in QuickBooks
  • You're using an incorrect VAT registration number in the VAT settings
  • You have used the incorrect Government Gateway credentials
  • You/client don't have any open obligations with HMRC or the current VAT return period hasn't ended yet

Once you turn on MTD and authorise QuickBooks to interact with HMRC, you’ll need to re-authenticate the connection every 18 months. We'll let you know when to do so to keep your account updated.

Moreover, your client's VAT registration number (VRN) should be the same as the one you used when you signed up for MTD for VAT. Let's go ahead and check if you’re using the correct VRN on their VAT settings page. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Taxes menu.
  2. Choose the VAT tab.
  3. Select the Edit VAT ▼ dropdown arrow.
  4. Choose the Edit settings option. You'll be routed to the Edit HM Revenue & Customs (VAT) settings page to check your client's VRN.
  5. Click Save.

To guide you further in resolving the VAT connection error you've encountered, please refer to this article: Take action status when connecting to HMRC for Making Tax Digital (MTD).

Once the error is fixed and everything is all set, you may also want to check out these articles as your reference on how MTD affects your business and to answer the most commonly asked questions about it:

Please keep me posted on how it goes in the comments below. If you have other VAT concerns or questions about managing your client's connection to MTD for VAT in QBO, I'm always ready to help. Take care, and I wish you continued success, @hollie-gibbonbs-.
