Hi there, shoodersanderson.

I'm with you in making sure you're able to connect to HMRC so you can submit returns seamlessly.

Before we start, I would like to know if you receive any error messages when attempting to connect to HRMC? I'd appreciate any additional information to help me isolate this case.

Just in case you encountered one, I'll be leaving this article for the steps in resolving issues when you can't connect to HRMC: Take action status when connecting to HMRC for Making Tax Digital (MTD).

In the meantime, we can perform some troubleshooting steps to determine if this problem is caused by a corrupted cache on your browser. Let's begin with accessing your QBO account using incognito. Private modes do not store cache files and will give you a clean slate to prevent errors when running websites.

Here are the shortcut keys you can use:

  • Google Chrome: Press CTRL + Shift + N.
  • Safari: Press Command + Shift + N.
  • Mozilla Firefox: Press CTRL + Shift + P.

Once signed in, connect to HRMC again. If this works, go back to your regular browser and clear the cache. This will eliminate old and damaged files and will enhance your system's background processes. If the same thing happens, you can also use another supported browser as an alternative.

However, if you're still unable to connect, I recommend reaching out to HRMC to verify if there are any maintenance issues on their end. They can also provide a different way to help you connect to them.

When everything is fine, I've added this helpful link to guide you in submitting your VAT return: Submit an MTD for VAT return to HMRC in QuickBooks Online.

I'm always willing to assist you further with any QBO concerns you may have. Keep safe and have a good one.
