What happens after my accountant removes me from their wholesale billing?

I currently have a Quickbooks Online account that's being paid for through my accountant (for a discounted price). Based on other support articles, it sounds like my accountant can remove me from their wholesale billing list and then I can be added onto another accountant's list.

However, if I want to take over my online account entirely and not have any accountant manage the account/billing, will this be possible? I will be terminating services with my current accountant and just want to make sure that, when they remove me from their wholesale billing list, I will have the same Quickbooks Online account/login/access. I'm hoping I won't have to extract all the data from my current account and create a new account to transfer it to

Hi there, @renayys.

It's my priority to help you know what happens to your QuickBooks Online account after your accountant removes you from their list.

Fiat Lux - ASIA is correct. Meanwhile, yes, the articles are correct that you'll have to request the accountant to remove you from their list. However, the accountant will need to transfer the primary admin access back to your profile.

These are the steps that the accountant can follow:

  1. Open QuickBooks Online Accountant (QBOA).
  2. Go to the Gear icon, then tap on Subscriptions and billing.
  3. Select the Your subscriptions tab.
  4. Choose a client to remove. If the client is currently inactive, make them active first.
  5. From the Select action dropdown, hit Remove from Wholesale.

After your accountant removes you from wholesale billing, you'll have read-only access to your QuickBooks company. This means that you can see your accounting data but can't make any changes until you update your billing info. It also indicates you need to enter your bank or card details to resubscribe and charge you at a regular rate.

In this manner, you'll have the same access to the account, including your login credentials, without having the accountant manage your account or billing or creating a new QBO company to transfer the data into.

Additionally, you can check the Manage billing, payment, and subscription info in QuickBooks Online article to learn more details about handling your account. This includes how to change your payment method and billing schedule.

Wanted to see more information about how accountants do their part when the firm detaches you from their client's list? Feel free to check these articles:

If you have any other follow-up questions about handling QBO wholesale billing accounts, let me know in the comment. I'm always here to help. Have a great weekend!

If you don't have any dispute with your accountant, they will transfer the Primary Admin role to you without any issue. Otherwise, you may need a workaround to get your data.
