Why is my CIS return being rejected?

I don't know why the return has been rejected - no explanation given - and normal passwords used.

Why is my CIS return being rejected?

I'm here to help and ensure you're able to submit CIS returns, alan68.

HRMC might reject your CIS return due to any of the following:

  • You have used the wrong login credentials. To verify it is correct, sign in to the HMRC website.
  • Ensure you're using the right 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number.
  • Double-check that you're using the correct PAYE Reference number.
  • Check that your suppliers have the correct references and CIS setup.
  • Remove any special characters and additional spaces in the subcontractor/contractor name field. Only use letters A-Z and numbers 0-9.

You need to make sure all mentioned information above are correct. You can log into the HMRC website to confirm your credentials.

Then, you can contact our QuickBooks Online Support Team.  They can unfile the rejected CIS return so you can re-submit it. Here's how to get in touch with them:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Select Help (?).
  3. In QB Assistant, enter the topic you need help with. You can also enter questions.
  4. Select Contact Us to connect with a live support agent.
  5. Choose a way to connect with us:
    • Start a chat with a support expert. Live chat all day, M-F.
    • Ask the community  to get help from businesses like yours.
    • Call us. M-F, 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM and S-S, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

You can also manage submitting via the HMRC website before the cut off date. This is to ensure you wont obtain a late return penalty.

Check out this link for additional information: Filing CIS in QuickBooks Online. It provides instructions and detailed steps.

Also, running CIS reports in QuickBooks Online is a breeze. With this, you'll be able to review your contractor monthly statement, payment and deduction statement, and summary of the CIS deductions withheld.

I'm always around the corner to further assist you in preparing your CIS return. Thanks for dropping by. Take care and have a great day ahead.

Why is my CIS return being rejected?

I have been trying to do this since 19/11/2020 and although I have raised a ticket it has never been resolved.

Why is my CIS return being rejected?

I have the same problem and spoke to Quickbooks online assistant and they said there was nothing they could do as the credentials with HMRC must be incorrect!!! They are not and I have managed to log in to the HMRC account successfully with the same information.

I used to be able to submit my clients CIS returns using our agent login but this month for some reason they are telling me the password isn't long enough..... it is the same password we always use to log in to HMRC (only 8 characters long) but we have had it for years!  Quickbooks is now telling me my password needs to be over 10 characters long - this cannot be correct.....

Hi Leysa, HMRC have recently updated their recommended checklist for CIS authorsiation and the password is now required to be 10 characters long. If you experience any issue submitting your return in QB after updating this, please verify that the username entered is 12 characters in length - this will usually be numeric (0-9), but can also be alphanumeric (A-z + 0-9).

we are having this exact same issue! this month QB is saying it needs to be 10 characters or more. never been a issue before, we have logged on to HMRC and changed the password to more than 10 characters and it still doesn't work on QB!!

Let me route you to the best support, so this will be taken care of as soon as possible, JPS3.

When you change your password, make sure it follows HMRC's rules and is at least 10 characters but no more than 128 characters long.

Since QBO still doesn't accept the recommended password characters, I suggest reaching out to our customer care support so they can investigate this further. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help icon.
  2. Pick Talk to a human.
  3. Enter "Talk to a human" again in the search bar.
  4. Choose I still need a human, then click Contact us.
  5. Select Get a callback or Send a message to start a conversation.

To ensure you'll be assisted immediately, our support is available from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM on weekdays and 8:00 AM till 6:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday. For more info please check our support hours.

I've also attached an article about CIS and how you can use the feature in submitting returns in QBO: CIS guide in QuickBooks Online.

I'm all ears if you have other CIS concerns and questions about HMRC changing password in QBO. I'm always ready to help. Take care, and I wish you continued success.

This is also happening to me, and according to HMRC, countless others.

Is this being sorted by quickbooks?

Why is my CIS return being rejected?

Hi,

no message.
initially it wouldn’t let me log in as the password had to have 10 characters or more, which has never been an issue every month before.
I changed the password, it is not 10 characters, it lets me through the log in but asks me to contact QuickBooks so you can get to the bottom of it.
It then shows as a rejected return.

I have been on the phone to QuickBooks twice, they blame HMRC, I’ve spoke to HMRC, there is no issue.
I can sign on to the gov gateway for CIS no issue using the same details.
HMRC said it must be a QuickBooks issue, and they have had a lot of calls recently with the same issue from different people.

Yep exactly the same here, QuickBooks support are useless, 100% QuickBooks issue as the log in works for HMRC. We all just get late filling fee’s because QuickBooks software isn’t working

Why is my CIS return being rejected?

I have been through the issues with QBO support twice, and HMRC once.

HMRC are saying its a quickbooks issue.

All credentials are correct.

There is an issue with the software, when will this be resolved????
