Workplace pension categories

What category and sub category do I place an employee who doesn’t meet the earning threshold for auto enrolment?

Workplace pension categories

I'm here to help categorise an employee who doesn't meet the earning threshold, Hberry.

Staff will fall into one of two categories:

  1. Type 1 - staff who must be put into a pension scheme.
  2. Type 2 - staff who don't need to be put into a pension scheme.

You can categorise the employee under Type 2. If you're unable to decide whether to auto-enroll the employee or not, I suggest contacting your agency or HMRC.

For other employees who meet the threshold, here are the articles to help manage them in QuickBooks:

I understand that, however it’s the “which one applies to *****?” Either active workplace pension, inactive workplace pension, auto enrolment postponed or none of the above. I am not sure which to tick for someone who doesn’t meet the auto enrolment earnings.

Thanks for coming back to the Community, Hberry.

I’m here to make sure your employee’s pension is properly set up in QBO. We’ll have to go to the Workplace pension settings and choose the Opt out option.

Let me help and guide you through the process. Here’s how:

  1. Navigate to the Payroll menu on the left panel to choose Employees.
  2. This will open a page where you’ll see all the workers’ names.
  3. From there, click on the employee’s name to see more details.
  4. Choose the Profile tab and click the Pencil icon for Workplace pension to view the setup.
  5. Tap the Enrolled in pension option to display the To leave the pension screen.
  6. Tick the radio button for Opt out and type the effective date in the field box.opt out.png
  7. Hit Done to keep the changes.

Let me share this article to learn more about workplace pensions. It includes instructions on how to set up the payroll item, set the start date, etc: Workplace pensions in QuickBooks Online Standard Payroll.
