Find any file of *.QBW, *.QBB, *.QBM, or *.ADR

Which QB Desktop year version did you use last time? Use your license to reinstall on another computer and open of those files.

What do you mean by "offline" and "online"?

Are you not running your QB Desktop on your local machine?

You correct. What happened is my hard drive crashed but i had set the network path to allow me to access folders and files in that machine remotely from my laptop. That the reason the QB files have an icon description stating they are only available online and not offline.

Hi there, @ISAKARFUSA.

It's my priory that you'll be able to work with your company file on the new PC with no issues.

Before you start, make sure you install QuickBooks Desktop on the new computer. Then follow these steps below:

  1. Follow the steps to create a backup company file on your original computer.
  2. When you save the backup file, give it a unique name so it's easy to identify. This also prevents accidental overwrites.
  3. Save the backup file somewhere you can easily find it, like your Windows desktop.
  4. Move the backup company file to your new computer. You can either put the backup on a flash drive or an external device. Or you can share it if your new computer is on the same network.
  5. Follow the steps to restore the backup on your new computer. Remember, it should have a unique file name.

If you just need to move your company file to another folder or location:

  1. Follow the steps to create a backup company file.
  2. When you save the backup, give it a unique name so it's easy to identify. This also prevents accidental overwrites.
  3. Save the backup somewhere you can easily find it, like your Windows desktop. Note: If your company file is hosted on a network, save the backup on your computer's local hard drive. Don't save it on your network.
  4. Follow the steps to restore the backup to the new folder or location. Remember, it should have a unique filename.

After you restore the backup, use it as your new main company file. We also recommend you rename your original company file. Add the word "old" to the filename so you know not to use it anymore.

I'm adding this article to learn more about converting company files to a newer version: Upgrade your company files after you switch to a new version of QuickBooks Desktop.

Let me know on how these steps work for you by leaving a reply. I'll make you're all set. Have a good one!

Thanks for your response.

However the solutions provided are only applicable if you have access to the original source computer.

In my circumstances i dont have that access coz the hard drive crashed and is inaccessible. All am left with is the view from a remote computer for which the QB files had not been cleared to be accessed due to the sensitivity of the data.

Kindly see the below screen shot.

Hello, ISAKARFUSA.

I appreciate the screenshot and the details provided. I'll jump in and point us to the right direction to fix the access issues about your company file.

Judging from the screenshot and the details you've provided, it looks like the network access from your laptop is damaged right after the crash. There could be some settings that were automatically changed. Although, a permission issue can also cause this issue, so it's worth taking a look at.

To fix this and ensure you'll be able to access the company file, we'll want to reach out to an IT professional. We'll want to have them take a look at the network settings on the source computer and restore the connection to its proper state.

After fixing the issue with an IT professional, we would want to check if the data in your company file is intact and accurate after the crash. We can run reports to do this. If you need help in the near future, I'll include this article: Understand reports.

I'm always available to help if you need assistance with your company file or your data. If you happen to come across any difficulties while managing your entries in the future, let me know and I'll assist you.
