When you make a customer inactive, they'll be removed from your client's list. If there are transactions assigned to them, they will remain in your reports.
Here's how:
If you want to completely remove the customer from your list, you can merge their profile to the correct one. This way, you'll only see one active profile in QBO. You can learn more about it here: Merge customers.

Can I delete a customer altogether? I don't want to make it inactive.

We can only make customers inactive in QuickBooks Online. The same goes for vendors and other lists in the program. After making them inactive, they will be hidden from lists and menus.. Although, the transactions will remain in your account.
If the customer profile does not have any transactions attached to it, you can reuse or rename it in case a new customer comes in. Let me share these articles with you for more reference:
