What actually happens after 31st January 2023 to my QuickBooks Desktop product?

That is what I've been saying since the first announcement in October 2021. I suspect that there are a lot of companies who still haven't realised the implications. I have spoken with the QuickBooks and the last call suggested that Intuit were looking at the option for a read only licence. I've heard nothing since, we have limited time to make final decisions about how we deal with this.

Hello Ell281, thanks for posting on this thread, You cannot go back, so if you have a file opened in 2021 version, you can't open that file in the 2020 version or back more.  We are looking into having the option to have it as a read only for our customers, soon as there is any update on it we will inform our customers.

In another thread posted a week ago the below says discontinuation delayed until June 23 - is this correct please? Anyone had an email confirming this yet?

Hi Katie92, based on customer feedback we're extending the deadline of our QuickBooks Desktop discontinuation for all users until June 2023, during which you'll have access as usual to your Desktop product and to our customer support team. If you haven't already received this, we'll be sending out email communication in the coming weeks with further details. We'll also be sharing a second update on the 17th October 2022 to provide you with more details on the migration options, as well as how you can access your historical accounting data after the discontinuation. :)

I haven't received any email as yet.

It may be because their company file migration from desktop to Online version has been suspended currently.

Trying to enable larger company file migration apparently.

Time has nearly run out yet they have not given us any way of saving or viewing our old company data in case of government auditing.

I think they will be saying you have access to the old data if you go Online and pay £6/month for the minimum package, once they sort the migration issues.

Technically we still have access to the DATA via the company file.

Interpreting it is another thing and may need payment...

Having now telephoned support they confirmed that discontinuation has been extended to June 23 and that emails confirming this are currently being sent out in batches.

I wonder how many of them emails are being bounced back. Their track record isn't very good with their email servers is it.

I have not received an email recently, certainly nothing to state that there is an extension and neither have any of my clients.

Hello Ell281, we sent an email out around the 7th of September on wards to inform our customers that based on customer feedback, we're extending the deadline of our QuickBooks Desktop discontinuation for all users until June 2023. If you haven't already received this, we'll be sending out email communication in the upcoming weeks with further details for our customers. We will also be sending a second update around the 17th October 2022 to provide you all with more information on the migration options, and on how you can access all your historical accounting data after the discontinuation of the desktop product.

To help transition to QuickBooks Online - we’ve teamed up with Move My Books - a leading data conversion tool for accounting software, giving you the option of transferring your historical accounting data to QuickBooks Online.

Rest assured if you decide to leave QuickBooks and use alternative accounting software, our support team will look to offer guidance where possible.
When can I begin migration?
We’ll be in touch in October 2022 to provide more details on your migration options, along with further information on how you can access your historical accounting data after QuickBooks Desktop is discontinued.

October has been and gone and while I and my clients appreciate the extension that gets us to the end of the financial year 31.03.23, for most of us the issue of accessing historical data is still not resolved. In my quest to find vuiable alternative software it has become very very clear that QuickBooks Desktop was far more superior than any of us appreciated and we recognise that it was grossly undervalued by Intuit. It is worth coniderably more per month than what we have been paying at least in comparison with what is available on the market. Pity Intuit didn't increase the Pro & Accountants versions and invest the funds into ensuring they kept HMRC happy as I think that this is what the issue was with payroll that ceased 2020 and now all of desktop I suspect du to Making Tax Digital. Intuit you are missing a trick. Give us our data access and relaunch the top end of the product at a realistic price for both Intuit and your clients, I believe not only will you keep a lot of us happy but will gain a host of new users!

Ell - that is exactly the correct response. Intuit - you have the best product on the market with QBD. I understand that you are purely motivated by money and by getting subscriptions from every company file - so change the desktop system that each license can only be used for one company file and not multiple files. Our practise has over 200 clients - I would happily pay £5 per month per file or more to keep QB desktop and not have to use QBO, the feeble excuse for bookkeeping software.

Ell and Yosef, I couldn't agree with both of you more! Please would someone at the top of Intuit realise that you are pressing the self-destruct button here!  Intuit, please stop telling us QBO is a viable replacement; it is not even good enough for the small clients. I have been looking at alternative providers but nothing is as good. Make us an offer Intuit... how much would you want to charge us to keep this a viable product from your financial perspective? Any Intuit employees reading this who care about their customers, want their employer to succeed or want to make a difference today, please raise this with the most senior managers you can!

The sad state of affairs with Intuit is they don't listen. They have decided that the UK, for whatever reason, can’t have access to Desktop, but all other countries can. I’m guessing they are using the UK as a test see how well it goes. So far, not very well. They are losing customers hand over fist as companies look for alternatives. This is putting unnecessary strain on small businesses in particular when most are struggling with everything that is going on currently.

You got to remember this is a 2 BILLION dollar business. Why they are dropping a brilliant product like Desktop is beyond me. They’ve never even explained why.

We know that this isn't ideal for users that loved the functionalities of desktop and this has been noted by all of the relevant teams working here, including senior management. Ashleigh. I think senior management need to grow a spine and come on here and explain why Intuit has made the decision to pull Desktop in the UK only. And by offering a far inferior product as a replacement.
 


 

It's a poor excuse saying it's not ideal just doesn't wash it for the thousands of companies which have been affected by this crass decision. It’s been BADLY thought out and BADLY implemented. 
 


 

This isn't progress, this is a backwards step for all involved. Meanwhile there are so many bugs which go on for years not being fixed, and it's getting worse with no resolutions being given. Just look at the state of the failed invoices/email problem.

Constantly telling your customers it will be fixed with no actual date is one sure fire way to drives people away from the product. 23 years I've been with Intuit, if I could afford to move my legally binding accounts with me I would, but I can't, so I'm stuck with this pile of rubbish. It's an embarrassment sending out send form with terrible data fields, it's an embarrassment having customers ask why the statements have invoices they've not received. It's an embarrassment customer asking why I'm sending them forms with a quickbooks email address!!!!!

I understand your disappointment with the discontinuation of QuickBooks Desktop in the UK. The decision to discontinue QuickBooks Desktop in the UK is due to market conditions. The new Making Tax Digital for VAT rules and regular updates to tax requirements. Plus, the increasing demand for cloud-based applications is causing the decline in demand for desktop software.

 

However, I'd suggest submitting feedback to our product engineers. They may look into this suggestion and consider not discontinuing the product. To send feedback, you can go to the Help menu and select Send Feedback Online. Then, choose Product Suggestions and enter your feedback.

@Mark Intuit has made Desktop MTD compliant with no major changes coming in tax requirements on the horizon is total rubbish. Even if there were any major changes then Intuit has an obligation to comply including QBO, otherwise why would the company be in the business of accounting.
All countries Intuit has a footprint in will always have to move with the government obligations, so your statement is null and void.

If there are any extra costs to Intuits buisness model when at least give your long standing customers an option. The only option your have presented is a hald baked versions of Desktop or finding another software service.

Thanks Mark, I have just done as suggested. Established companies are not interested in bank feeds, uploading receipts from mobile phones etc. They are professionals, they use the stock functions, material builds for manufacturing, the flexibility that allows them to cost projects. 22+ years I have been using Desktop and all of it's functions have been there all this time. Online is geared to new startup businesses - not established companies - it falls short of what is needed. We aren't expecting something new just something that has been in existence for over 20 technological years!! Anyone at Intuit considers going from desktop to online is a fair exchange has their head in the cloud! The few clients who have already switched have not gone to QuickBooks Online they have gone to a competitor because they are disgusted with the way they have been treated.

@ell281The problem is simple. Intuit don't care what we think. Customer service is dire, feedback system is stupid, respect for their loyal customers is non-exsitant.

Today another email from Intuit highlighting that they have totally missed the issue yet again. They are developing - at our request apparently - a tool that will enable extraction of data but as I understand it this is via a web based access. In the absence of a change of heart WHAT WE ACTUALLY NEED is a read only, one off payment, licence so that we can access what we want as and when we or HMRC want it. May I remind the expert IT people in Intuit working on this, that when desktop Payroll ceased the extraction method was woefully inadequate - and yes HMRC were very aware of it and in the absence of Intuit support actually assisted resulted in my having to recreate 3 years payroll in the HMRC software Basic PAYE Tools in order to correct QUickBooks Payroll software errors  - ithe extractio file was aptly called UKDataDump!! 

I do not understand why Intuit think it acceptable to treat it's lgng term UK customers in this way. Online account software is very very very basic. It is geared to new, single user, businesses, a niche market but not for  established businesses with many needs. Desktop has been the best software on the market for over 20 years. Online is one of many alternatives all equally basic none with Desktop's functionality or usefullness.AND yet again I must confirm that anyone expecting the transfer of data from Desktop Pro to Online to give them everything they already have will be sadly disappointed. 2 of my clients have already tried it in the past and swiftly went back to Desktop. If you are transferring data from one system to another and the new one has less functionality then there is nowhere for that data to go to! I despair but I do not intend to take the lack of a read only file as a viable alternative.

You’re not wrong about Desktop and how they are treating UK users with disdain. They’ve stated management are removing Desktop as a product in the UK because of the demand of cloud services. What a load of rubbish as so far no other country is being forced off Desktop as far as I can see. I’m guessing they’ve used the UK market as a test to see how much they can get away with.

 

it’s a sad state of affairs and is a suicidal decision in the market please. I now know of 12 clients of mine who have ditched Intuit and moved to other platforms at great expense in sum cases.
