.CSV file saved as a .TLG, which won't open

Hi

We were forced to move to online accounts from our faster, more versatile PC system.
The old accounts were saved online, and we have been previously able to access the information, if rather slowly.

Previously, reports exported via the Save to Excel option were in .CSV format. Now, although the system says that it is doing this, the report shows in the Temporary File folder as a .TLG file - which won't open.


I tried the online chat option, but the company representative had no idea what to do, or if anyone in the company knew either.

 

It would be rather helpful if we could access the archived five years worth of accounts as we have a VAT inspection pending, and HMRC are unlikely to be impressed by an excuse on a par with 'my dog ate my homework'.

I started from scratch again this morning and the system is now exporting .CSV files - must have been a glitch before.

I understand that you’re in the process of migrating from QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) and have encountered some challenges. I’m here to provide clarification and guide you through the necessary steps to resolve this issue.

 

QuickBooks maintains a record of changes to your company file since your last backup. This information is stored in a file with a .TLG extension. This is a default file name or location when you restore your data. Conversely, CSV files are simple text files containing tabular data, with each field separated by a comma.

 

If you’re having trouble opening the .TLG file, I recommend re-exporting the report, provided you still have an active QBDT license. Here’s how to do it:

 

  1. Navigate to the Reports menu and select Reports Centre.
  2. Find and open any report.
  3. On the toolbar, select Excel. Optionally, you can  Print or Email to save the report as a PDF.
  4. Choose Create New Worksheet for a new workbookor Update Existing Worksheet to modify an existing one.
  5. Optionally, select Advanced for specific formatting.
  6. When you’re ready to export, select OK. To open the report in Excel, you can also select Export.

 

However, if you no longer have access to your company file, I suggest reaching out to our QuickBooks Data Support team. They can assist you in recovering your company file.

We started a fresh set of accounts with Quickbooks online for our new tax year, while still running the PC version for the previous periods. When this was no longer supported, we uploaded our PC files to Quickbooks, separately from the current period, then log on access them by opening a session. limited functionality, but the system previously did create .CSV files when it said it was going to.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, that's how I used to be able to access reports - but now the system says that it has saved a .CSV file, although the actual file is a .TLG.

 

I did contact Quickbooks support, they had no idea how to fix their glitch and suggested that I posted a comment here. seems like an abdication of their responsibilities.
