Hi there, Batty.
You should able to identify the expense as cash in QuickBooks Online.
Since you don't have the option to identify the expense as cash, I suggest logging in your QBO account using a private browser. This way, we can rule out the possibility of a webpage issue. Private browsing doesn't store local files or cache. You may use these keyboard shortcuts in opening a private/incognito window:
Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
Internet Explorer: Ctrl + Shift + P
Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
Safari: Command + Option + P
If it works in incognito, clear the cache of your regular browser. Doing this helps QBO to function more efficiently.
If the steps above will not work, you can use supported browser as alternatives.
Please check this article on how to create, edit, and delete expenses such as cash or cheque purchases in QuickBooks Online: Enter, edit, or delete expenses in QuickBooks Online.

Thanks for your reply. I agree that I can select the cash option on QB Online.
My issue is that I can’t select that on the mobile app, so I have to separately go to the QB Online to set that field. Hundreds of times a week. There does not appear to be a batch edit option. The second thing i need to do is associate the expense with a project - apparently can't do that either in the app; so also has to be one in QB-Online again with no batch edit.
Thanks for getting back to us, @Batty.
In QuickBooks Online (QBO) mobile app, the ability to select or identify an expense as cash is currently unavailable. You can log into your account using a web browser edit the expense from there as a workaround.
I can see how this option would be helpful for you and your business. Rest assured that I'll pass your suggestion to our Product Developers. They're always looking for ideas to consider on how to improve QBO.
In the meantime, I recommend visiting our Blog site. This is where we share recent happenings and future developments, such as updates to newly added features.
