When entering sales orders, in most cases I know the product code, but sometimes find this a bit tricky. When that happens I exit the sales order, go to items and then search to find the item. I knew the item name included the name "Kit" and found it looking at items.
Is there a wildcard search feature when entering items?
I was hoping I might have been able to type in *kit* or %kit% to display all items that matched.
Is there such a feature?
I can share some information in creating a sales order in QuickBooks Desktop 2021, @DBR97.
When creating a sales order using QuickBooks Desktop 2021, the app will guess the item that you're trying to type. You can check the example that I'll be providing below. I typed for car and then Subs:Carpet showed.
You can also click on Find & Select Items to look for items that'll be added to the end of the list.
For more information about this, check this article: Create a sales order . To see the complete list of workflows and other customer-related transactions, check this get started with customer transaction workflows in QuickBooks Desktop article.

Thanks for your reply. So I need to prefix the search with subs: ?
What if there is a word "Kit" anywhere in an item name?
Let me share additional information, @DBR97.
You'd want to make sure that your QuickBooks is set to automatically predict or display drop-down lists when adding items to a sales order or other sales forms. I can guide you on how to do it.
Now, you can try creating a sales order. Once you enter one letter to indicate an item, you'll automatically see a pop-up that will predict the complete code or name of the item you're trying to include. This way, you'll no longer need to view your item list. I've attached a screenshot for your reference.
On the other hand, adding a "Sub" on your item list means that the specific item is a sub-item of an existing item. It may denote that it is the same item but may differ in color, quality, size, manufacturer, or price.

Thanks for the information. Actually the option to "Automatically open Drop-down lists" is already set. That works fine for items that might start with a particular letter. The problem I had was for one manufacturer there are a lot of items and one thing I knew was the word "kit" is mentioned somewhere it the item name.
I can find any product that has the word "kit" if I search in Items and Services. That has a more powerful search feature and that's what I currently use if I'm not sure of the item number.
It's a shame that search feature isn't available when entering orders.
Just as a separate example, on my web site I can put % symbols either side of text to show what I'm searching for. In that case if an item has the word "kit" anywhere in the product description it will display it.
So it looks like my workaround is the only way for my specific example. Perhaps that feature might be considered in a future version of Quckbooks.
Thanks again for your help.
Kind regards
Dave
